Destiny 2: Best Void SMGs (2024)

SMGs in Destiny 2 have always seen a ton of attention, and that’s no different these days. While having weapons that match a certain Energy type isn’t as important now that Match Game isn’t such a problem, they’re still great to have! In this article, we’ll briefly discuss why you might want to use a specific weapon type, then we’ll look at the 5 best Void SMGs in Destiny 2!

Why Use a Void SMG?

There are a ton of reasons why you might want to use a Void SMG, and they’re the same reasons as why you might want to use any Energy weapon.

There are multiple armor mods that interact with your weapons, and most of them need to match up with the weapon’s energy type. For example, a Void weapon gets the chance to utilize mods like Void Weapon Surge or Unflinching Void Aim. So if you want to use those kinds of mods (which you usually will), you’ll need to make sure to match your weapon to the mod types. (Each mod has a version for every energy type.)

There are also reasons you might need to use a weapon that matches your subclass. One example is to synergize with your Exotic armor or to activate one of your subclass Fragments. It’s also worth remembering that Energy weapons do increased damage to shielded combatants of a matching type. As such, a Void SMG might be exactly what you need when fighting a shielded Void enemy.

You’re almost guaranteed to need certain Energy-type weapons for one reason or another in Destiny 2, so it’s good to have one for every occasion.

The 5 Best Void SMGs in Destiny 2

There are only 7 Void SMGs that aren’t either sunset (effectively removed from the game) or beneath Legendary rarity. However, since the better ones are fairly close in comparison, we think it’s worthwhile to take an in-depth look at the few options we do have to see which are the best. Here’s our list of the 5 best Void SMGs in Destiny 2, starting from number 5!

The Hero’s Burden

How to Get: Iron Banner

The Hero’s Burden is in a weird place right now. It’s really only good in PvE, but it’s an Iron Banner weapon.

Since it’s tied to a PvP activity, there’s a good chance many of the people who might want it have just never given it much attention. And there are also a lot of people who just aren’t willing to play enough PvP to farm a good roll. But for those who are willing to, The Hero’s Burden is surprisingly strong in PvE thanks to its god roll of Feeding Frenzy + Destabilizing Rounds.

Feeding Frenzy is a common perk to find on SMGs, as all it does is improve your reload speed after each kill with the weapon. It’s great for add-clear weapons in PvE, which is exactly what this one is. The other perk, Destabilizing Rounds, is much more exciting. It causes final blows to make enemies near the killed one become volatile, which makes them take more damage. This is an incredibly powerful perk, and this is one of the only primary weapons that can currently get it.

The Hero’s Burden is a good Void SMG for PvE if you really want an easy way to make targets volatile. However, since both its god roll perks require final blows, it isn’t the best for GMs or other content where kills are harder to get. For everything else in PvE, though, this is a solid option.

The Title

How to Get: Guardian Games event (when available during the summer)

The Title has had its ups and downs, but it’s still one of the better event weapons in the game. These days, it has really good potential for PvE thanks to the Repulsor Brace perk.

This perk (which is also on other SMGs) gives you a 45-HP overshield when you kill a Void-debuffed enemy, so it’s really helpful for certain Void builds. Just use a way to make your weapon rounds Volatile or a suppressing effect to accomplish this easily.

The PvE god roll for The Title is Threat Detector or Perpetual Motion + Repulsor Brace. Threat Detector is a strong perk that doesn’t require much to work. When enemies are near, you get bonuses to reload, stability, and handling thanks to Threat Detector. The amount of each bonus goes up based on if it’s only 1 enemy or more than that. This incentivizes being up close to enemies, and Repulsor Brace’s overshield is great for allowing you to do that more safely. Perpetual Motion, on the other hand, incentivizes you to run around a lot more. It increases your reload speed, stability, and handling while moving, so it’s great for the more mobile builds out there.

The Title used to be more useful than it is now in PvP, but the recent Rangefinder nerf took away the only good PvP perk in the second slot. Rangefinder is still pretty good, but it’s nowhere near as strong as it used to be. However, if you do want to use The Title in PvP, we’d recommend a god roll of Perpetual Motion or Dynamic Sway Reduction + Rangefinder.

Shayura’s Wrath

How to Get: Trials of Osiris

Shayura’s Wrath is the best Void SMG for PvP. Since it’s a Trials weapon that shouldn’t be surprising, but we’ve seen already with The Hero’s Burden that weapons aren’t always good in the activity they drop from.

Shayura’s Wrath has a great feel and good enough perks to carry you all the way to the Lighthouse, especially if you have an adept one from a previous run. Regardless of which version you have, Shayura’s Wrath is something every SMG fan should have.

There are a few god rolls for Shayura’s Wrath in PvP, including Dynamic Sway Reduction + Kill Clip, Killing Wind + Kill Clip, and Dynamic Sway Reduction + Tap the Trigger. To break those down, let’s just take a quick look at what each perk does, as none of them have any specific interactions with one another (mostly).

Kill Clip is featured a lot, which is simple to explain. After getting a kill and reloading, Kill Clip grants you 25% increased damage for 5 seconds. That’s more than enough time to grab a couple more kills, and the damage boost is quite a lot. Killing Wind does actually combo well with Kill Clip, as it also gives a bonus after killing an enemy. Specifically, it’s 50 mobility, 40 handling, 20 range, and 5% increased damage falloff range for 5 seconds.

The other two don’t involve getting kills, so they can be a bit more consistent long-term. Dynamic Sway Reduction simply improves your accuracy and stability while delivering sustained fire, and Tap the Trigger increases your stability and accuracy immediately after you pull the trigger.

For PvP, this weapon is an absolute beast. It might not be the overall best SMG right now for PvP, but it’s definitely the best if you need a Void one.

Best Masterwork Option for Shayura’s Wrath: Reload Speed (especially if you’re using Kill Clip as one of your perks)

Best Weapon Mod for Shayura’s Wrath: Targeting Adjuster (non-adept) / Adept Range (adept versions)

Unforgiven

How to Get: Duality Dungeon

Unforgiven is, without a doubt, the coolest looking Void SMG. Luckily, it’s also really great, thanks to its variety of strong god rolls. It only has good PvE rolls, but that’s fine since it has so many. The best god rolls for Unforgiven are Demolitionist + Adrenaline Junky, Demolitionist + Frenzy, and Feeding Frenzy + Repulsor Brace.

The Demo + Adrenaline Junky combo has the most synergy, as Demolitionist causes your weapons to refill grenade energy partially on kills and Adrenaline Junky increases damage after grenade kills (and weapon kills). For grenade-heavy builds, this is absolutely the way to go.

However, Demo + Frenzy is also good if you don’t want to focus so much on getting kills constantly to refresh the buff. It’s also better in GMs and other high-end content where kills are harder to get.

Feeding Frenzy + Repulsor Brace is a more niche god roll, as it requires you to have a way to effect targets with a Void debuff for the Repulsor Brace overshield to activate. But if you can do that, then it becomes a fun and effective build for mid-tier content.

Unforgiven is an incredible PvE weapon, with multiple god rolls to allow for more specific builds. The feel of this weapon is arguably better than any other on this list, but to be fair, that’s subjective. If you don’t mind farming dungeons for a long time, this is a weapon you should seek out.

Funnelweb

Funnelweb - Best Void SMG for PvE in Destiny 2

How to Get: Legendary Engrams (World Drops)

Funnelweb is the best Void SMG in Destiny 2 and has been a top meta weapon for quite a while now. The main reason for its long-term position in the meta are its perks and its origin trait. In terms of god rolls, there’s a very obvious one for PvE.

Subsistence + Frenzy is the PvE god roll for Funnelweb, as none of the other perks in either slot are anywhere near as good. Subsistence partially reloads the weapon after defeating an enemy, and Frenzy gives you a 15% damage bonus after you’ve been in combat for 12 seconds. Funnelweb’s god roll allows for a weapon with unmatched consistency and great add-clear, so it’s perfect for a wide variety of activities.

The other main reason Funnelweb is so good is the origin trait Veist Stinger. Despite being nerfed a while back, it’s still a great perk that gives a number of bonuses.

The way Veist Stinger works is simple. It’s a status effect that will show up on the bottom left side of your screen with a timer. To activate it, you just need to shoot enemies with the weapon. Each shot landed has a 2% chance to activate the Veist Stinger buff (the percentage changes for other weapon types), and once it’s activated, it will also reload 25% of your weapon’s magazine instantly. In addition to the reload, you’ll also move faster while aiming down sights while Veist Stinger is active.
