Now in its 20th year of operation, World of Warcraft has long held the crown as the world’s most popular MMORPG, with 9 expansions and multiple live versions of the game from retail to WoW Classic. With even more new versions of the game and a whole trilogy of expansions announced at the most recent BlizzCon, there’s plenty going on in Azeroth and beyond, and even more to look forward to! Let me walk you through this week’s news and events for all versions of WoW, including Dragonflight, Wrath of the Lich King Classic, Season of Discovery, and WoW Classic Hardcore.
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
First I’ll walk you through what’s happening right now in Dragonflight, from this week’s in-game events to the most recent content patch and season. We’ll also cover some of the upcoming content in the 2024 roadmap, including the next expansion, The War Within!
Weekly Events in Dragonflight: February 20-26
There are plenty of limited-time events happening right now in World of Warcraft.
Here are this week’s Mythic+ dungeon affixes:
- Fortified: (keystone level 2+) Non-boss enemies have 20% more health and inflict up to 30% increased damage.
- Challenger’s Might: Causes the caster to inflict increased Physical damage.
- Entangling: (keystone level 7+) While in combat, entangling vines periodically appear and snare players.
- Bolstering: (keystone level 14+) When any non-boss enemy dies, its death cry empowers nearby allies, temporarily increasing their damage by 20%.
- Bolster: Bolsters allies within 30 yards upon death, increasing their damage done by 20% for 20 sec. Stacks.
My Tips: Some trash pulls can be tricky with the Fortified + Bolstering combination. Focus down the meanest mobs first so they don’t get Bolstered on top of being Fortified. Entangling is mostly just an annoyance, but one you’ll want to be ready to react to.
Next week’s affixes: Tyrannical, Incorporeal, Spiteful
The following world bosses are currently active in the Dragon Isles:
- Bazual in the Azurespan, a proto-dragon who drops ilvl 395 epics. Be sure to dodge his many fire area effects.
- Zaqali Elders in Zaralek Cavern, a pair of djaradin who drop ilvl 415 loot. These bosses must be tanked apart or they will gain 90% damage reduction.
Mists of Pandaria Timewalking Event
This week’s bonus event takes us back to the Mists of Pandaria expansion for some Timewalking dungeons. Speak with Kazra in Valdrakken or open up your Adventure Guide to pick up the weekly quest. This quest awards a Cache of Amirdrassil Treasures for completing five Timewalking dungeons.
You can queue for Timewalking Dungeons in the Dungeon Finder tab of the Group Finder.
Next week’s bonus event: Arena Skirmish Event
PvP Brawl: Arathi Blizzard
This week’s PvP Brawl takes us into Arathi Basin, which has seen a sudden drop in temperature. Snow covers the ground, the water is frozen over, and there’s a thick fog obscuring your vision. You can queue for this event in the Group Finder under the Player vs. Player tab.
Next week’s PvP Brawl: Gravity Lapse
Hatching of the Hippogryphs
There’s a special micro-holiday happening this week on February 23rd. Head over to Feralas to witness the hatching of the baby hippogryphs and get your temporary Grayfeather Hatchling.
February Trading Post
New items have come to the Trading Post as of February 1st. Head over there to get your hands on some new items, and don’t forget you can freeze one item every month to save it for later! This month’s Trading Post is full of pink and purple items for the Love is in the Air holiday.
Current Patch in Dragonflight: 10.2.5 Seeds of Renewal
The third major content update for Dragonflight was released on January 16th. Patch 10.2.5 Seeds of Renewal added a host of new content to the game.
The most anticipated feature of this patch is the addition of follower dungeons. These are Normal-difficulty Dragonflight dungeons that can be completed with a party of NPC followers. You can queue for these dungeons in the Group Finder, and any open spots in your party will be filled by NPCs. This is a great way to learn the mechanics, test out abilities, or just see the story in a low-pressure environment. This feature is not currently available for lower level dungeons or dungeons from the current Mythic rotation, but maybe we’ll see it expanded in the future.
There’s a new set of solo and group activities, including an hourly public event, that can be accessed within Traitor’s Rest in the Azure Span. You’ll need to pick up the quest “To the Archives!” from the Roasted Ram Inn in Valdrakken before you can participate.
Having lost their previous home of Darnassus when Sylvanas burned Teldrassil, the night elves are making a fresh start in The Emerald Dream at the settlement of Bel’ameth. This area is open to both Alliance and Horde, but you will need to have completed the Emerald Dream storyline to access it.
Gilneas Reclamation Questline
This patch also added a new questline to help King Greymane retake the worgen kingdom of Gilneas. These quests can be completed by both Alliance and Horde. To get started, Alliance players should head to Stormwind to speak with Genn Greymane, while Horde will need to visit Calia Menethil in Silverpine Forest.
As promised at Blizzcon, you can now use your Dragonriding mounts and abilities in any zone where flying was previously possible. So go ahead and explore all of those old low level zones from the back of your dragon. Dracthyr will also find that they are now able to use Dragonriding abilities by using their Soar ability.
New Character Customizations
This update brought new customization options to trolls, draenei, and warlock pets. Trolls received five new hair color options, and draenei now have a new skin tone option. The warlock tyrant demon now has five color options, while the darkglare has 11 variations, including three different models.
Current Season for Dragonflight: Season 3
The current season of Dragonflight, Season 3, began on November 14th, and included a new raid, a new Mythic+ dungeon rotation, and a new season of ranked arenas and battlegrounds.
With Season 3 we have a new raid that can be found in the Emerald Dream zone: Amirdrassil, the Dream’s Hope. This raid features nine boss encounters and can be completed on Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, or Mythic difficulty.
Season 3 brings a new rotation of dungeons for Mythic+, including a new dungeon, Dawn of the Infinite, which is split into two wings. Here are all of them:
- Dawn of the Infinite: Galakrond’s Fall (new)
- Dawn of the Infinite: Murozond’s Rise (new)
- Waycrest Manor (Battle for Azeroth)
- Atal’Dazar (Battle for Azeroth)
- Darkheart Thicket (Legion)
- Black Rook Hold (Legion)
- The Everbloom (Warlords of Draenor)
- Throne of the Tides (Cataclysm)
There’s a new season of ranked PvP for arenas and battlegrounds with a new set of ladders to climb. This season’s arena title is Verdant Gladiator and the rated solo shuffle title is Verdant Legend. There are plenty of other rewards to unlock, including a Verdant Gladiator’s Slitherdrake appearance for your dragonriding mount and a faction-themed Moonbeast ground mount.
There’s also a new 8v8 ranked PvP mode, Battleground Blitz Brawl. You can queue for this game mode solo or with a partner as long as one of you is a healer. You’ll be sent to one of eight existing battleground maps, which may have some slight changes to their rules.
What’s Next for Dragonflight: 2024 Roadmap
Blizzard released a roadmap for World of Warcraft late last year, laying out everything we can expect to see through the fall of 2024!
Next up on the roadmap is Patch 10.2.6, which has been left as a mystery with only a skull and crossbones symbol. Blizzard confirmed that there will be no public test realm for this patch and are keeping it a big secret!
Following the mystery update is the start of Season 4 in early spring. This season will bring a new rotation of Mythic+ dungeons, a new season for arenas and rated battlegrounds, new open world rewards, and fated raids – revamped Dragonflight raids on a weekly rotation, like we saw in Shadowlands.
The War Within
At BlizzCon we saw the announcement of not just one, but three upcoming expansions for retail WoW. World of Warcraft: The War Within will mark the start of the Worldsoul Saga, followed by the Midnight and The Last Titan expansions.
The War Within is set to release sometime before the end of 2024. It will include a new race, the Earthen, a race of titan-forged dwarves playable by either faction. There will be new Hero Talent trees, offering additional options for character builds. There will also be new raids, dungeons, and zones, and a new type of content, delves, which can be played solo or in a small group.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic
There’s plenty going on in Wrath of the Lich King Classic, between the current in-game events and the most recent content phase.
Current Events in Wrath Classic: February 20-26
Here are the limited-time events that are currently happening in Wrath of the Lich King Classic.
Call to Arms
This week’s Call to Arms is Eye of the Storm. From Friday through Tuesday, you’ll get extra Honor Points if you queue for this battleground.
Ruby Sanctum Raid
The Ruby Sanctum raid released on January 11th. This is the final raid of Wrath of the Lich King, with a single boss and some amazing loot.
Icecrown Citadel Buff
A buff is now being applied to players inside Icecrown Citadel. This buff increases the total health, healing, and damage of everyone in the raid by 30%. The buff started at 5% and increased every two weeks, and is now at its maximum.
Current Phase for Wrath Classic: Phase 5
The final content patch for Wrath of the Lich King released on January 11th! This brings us into Phase 5 of Wrath Classic, with only a single-boss raid to close out the expansion.
The Ruby Sanctum
The final raid of Wrath of the Lich King, Ruby Sanctum, is a single-boss raid located inside Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight. It offers some very nice upgrades for most players and marks the last piece of content to be released before we move into Cataclysm Classic later this year.
Although it isn’t actually the final raid of the expansion, Icecrown Citadel remains relevant in this patch as the culmination of the Northrend expedition and storyline, leading us to the frozen throne itself to face down one of the greatest villains of the Warcraft universe. This raid includes 12 bosses and can be completed on Normal or Heroic difficulty in either 10-player or 25-player mode. It also includes a quest for one of the most recognizable weapons in the game, the legendary axe Shadowmourne.
The Frozen Halls Dungeons
Along with the Icecrown Citadel raid, the Frozen Halls dungeons take us inside the citadel in a smaller group, where we can face some of the most challenging 5-player content of the expansion. These dungeons also drop the Battered Hilt, an item that starts the quest to obtain the epic weapon Quel’Delar.
The Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, and Halls of Reflection must be completed in order the first time through in order to unlock them all. They offer some of the best non-raid gear in the game and are an excellent opportunity to catch up or gear your alts.
Defense Protocol Gamma
Along with the new Frozen Halls dungeons, Phase 4 brought a new tier of Titan Rune or Heroic+ dungeons to WoW Classic. Activating Defense Protocol Gamma substantially increases enemy health from previous difficulty levels. To help you deal with this, you’ll have access to four possible buffs that can increase your damage, healing, and defense. Rewards you can earn through this mode include raid gear from Trial of the Crusader.
What’s Next for Wrath Classic: 2024 Roadmap
Blizzard showed us their roadmap for WoW Classic at the end of last year, showing us what we can expect for all versions of the game in 2024.
The Beta for Cataclysm Classic should be starting around March. it was recently pushed back on the roadmap and will now come sometime after self-found mode is released for WoW Classic Hardcore.
We’ve reach the end of Wrath of the Lich King‘s content, and the next patch will be the pre-patch for the Cataclysm expansion. This patch will include playable goblin and worgen races, new guild features, account-wide collections, and the new transmogrification system as well as many class changes. According to the roadmap, we can expect the pre-patch sometime in late spring. That leaves a long stretch to finish up whatever you want to do in WotLK.
The next expansion for WoW Classic, the world-altering Cataclysm expansion, is coming sometime this summer. This will mark the end of Wrath of the Lich King Classic, at least for the time being. The expansion includes a fully revamped Azeroth map that allows for flying as well as some new zones, dungeons, and raids, as well as the Archaeology profession.
World of Warcraft Classic: Season of Discovery
WoW Classic: Season of Discovery is shaking up the vanilla WoW meta with some new class abilities and leveling phases. Here’s a look at the latest news for this game mode.

Current Phase for Season of Discovery: Phase 1
We’re currently in Phase 2 of this season of WoW Classic, which offers a new level cap of 40 and some new endgame content. Players will be able to learn many higher level abilities as well as purchase their first regular mounts.
Phase 2 adds a new raid to the game, a 10-player reimagining of Gnomeregan, one of the mid-level dungeons from vanilla WoW. The raid includes six bosses and plenty of powerful new loot to gear up your level 25 character.
Also new for Phase 2 is a zone-wide event in Stranglethorn Vale, a free-for-all PvP event where you’ll be kill-on-sight to players from both factions.
Also being added in Phase 2 is the Arathi Basin battleground.
There are two new sets of rune engravings this phase for every class. These runes will go in the belt and boots slots. We’ll have another round of discoveries to make!
What’s Next for Season of Discovery: Phase 3
We haven’t heard much about Phase 3 yet other than it will raise the level cap to 50 and Phase 4 will raise it to 60. What the developers may have in store for these two upcoming phases and beyond is still a mystery.
World of Warcraft: Classic Hardcore
WoW Classic Hardcore is still going strong, having launched with all vanilla content already unlocked.
What’s Next for WoW Classic Hardcore: Self-Found Mode
A new self-found ruleset is coming to Hardcore on February 29. Self-found rules mean that you can only equip items you loot yourself. You won’t be able to get items by mail, trade, or the Auction House. This has commonly been used in player-made hardcore rules and will soon be officially supported in the game, although it will be completely optional.
