World of Warcraft: News, Events, Patch Notes

Everything that's happening in the world of WoW right now.

Now in its 20th year of operation, World of Warcraft has long held the crown as the world’s most popular MMORPG, with 9 expansions and multiple live versions of the game from retail to WoW Classic. With even more new versions of the game and a whole trilogy of expansions announced at the most recent BlizzCon, there’s plenty going on in Azeroth and beyond, and even more to look forward to! Let me walk you through this week’s news and events for all versions of WoW, including Dragonflight, Mists of Pandaria Remix, Cataclysm Classic, Season of Discovery, and WoW Classic Hardcore.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight

First I’ll walk you through what’s happening right now in Dragonflight, from this week’s in-game events to the most recent content patch and season. We’ll also cover some of the upcoming content in the 2024 roadmap, including the next expansion, The War Within!

Weekly Events in Dragonflight: June 18-24

There are plenty of limited-time events happening right now in retail World of Warcraft.

Mythic+ Affixes

Here are this week’s Mythic+ dungeon affixes:

  • Tyrannical: (keystone level 2+) Bosses have 30% more health. Bosses and their minions inflict up to 15% increased damage.
  • Entangling: (keystone level 4+) While in combat, entangling vines periodically appear and snare players.
  • Bursting: (keystone level 7+) When slain, non-boss enemies explode, causing all players to suffer damage over 4 sec. This effect stacks.

My Tips: This week is all about controlling your Bursting stacks so you don’t overwhelm your healer’s ability to keep up. The Tyrannical/Bursting combination can be particularly tricky at low to mid key levels, where trash has less health and will die faster. Priests’ Mass Dispel and Mistweaver Monks’ Revival are especially useful this week for clearing Bursting stacks. Entangling is mostly just an additional nuisance.

Next week’s affixes: Fortified, Volcanic, Spiteful

Dragonflight Dungeon Event

This week’s bonus event sends us into Season 4 Mythic dungeons. Speak with Kazra in Valdrakken or open up your Adventure Guide to pick up the weekly quest. This quest awards 2 Antique Bronze Bullion for completing 4 dungeons on Mythic difficulty. In addition, you’ll have a passive buff all week that grants an extra piece of loot from the final boss in any Dragonflight dungeon.

Next week’s bonus event: Mists of Pandaria Timewalking Event

PvP Brawl: Warsong Scramble

This week’s PvP Brawl takes us into Warsong Gulch, where there are three flags at each base instead of one, as well as additional power-ups scattered around the map. Your team must capture 10 flags first in order to win.

Next week’s PvP Brawl: Cooking Impossible

June Trading Post

New items are available in the Trading Post as of June 1st. Be sure to grab anything you want from the May stock or freeze it for later. This month’s inventory includes a number of beach-themed items to kick-start your summer vacation.

Midsummer Fire Festival

The Midsummer Fire Festival holiday event arrives on June 21st and lasts through July 5th. Honor the flames across Azeroth (and other realms) for some special rewards and achievements. The event concludes with a Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th & 5th.

Mists of Pandaria Remix

There’s a new limited event in World of Warcraft that began May 16th and will last for about three months! The Pandaria Remix event allows you to create a special Timerunner character to experience all of the content from the Mists of Pandaria expansion in a new, accelerated format, with all of the quality-of-life features and talents & abilities from Dragonflight. You don’t even need to own Dragonflight to experience this game mode!

Current Patch in Dragonflight: 10.2.7 Dark Heart

The final major content update for Dragonflight was released on May 7th. Patch 10.2.7 Dark Heart added a few new pieces of content to the game.

Dark Heart Questline

There’s a new questline in this update that introduces many of the characters and themes for the upcoming expansion, The War Within. Travel with Alleria Windrunner as she investigates the Dark Heart artifact and its new owner, the mysterious Harbinger.

Troll and Draenei Heritage Armor

Your Troll and Draenei characters will now be able to unlock new armor sets by completing a special questline.

New Character Customizations

Six new hair colors were added to the game for Kul Tiran Humans with this update.

Current Season for Dragonflight: Season 4

The current season of Dragonflight, Season 4, began on April 23rd, and brought a new Mythic+ dungeon rotation, a new season of ranked arenas and battlegrounds, and a new rotation of Awakened raids.

Instead of a new raid, this final season of Dragonflight has brought a new rotation of existing raids, similar to what we saw in Shadowlands with Fated raids. These Awakened raids will grant new and improved loot and can be completed on Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, or Mythic difficulty. We’ll be rotating through the three previous raids of the expansion from week to week.

Mythic+ Dungeons

Season 4 brings a new rotation of dungeons for Mythic+, as well as a new Hard mode for Dawn of the Infinite. The Mythic+ rotation includes all of the previous Dragonflight dungeons:

  • Algeth’ar Academy
  • Brackenhide Hollow
  • Halls of Infusion
  • Neltharus
  • Ruby Life Pools
  • The Azure Vault
  • The Nokhud Offensive
  • Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr

Ranked PvP

There’s a new season of ranked PvP for arenas and battlegrounds with a new set of ladders to climb. This season’s arena title is Draconic Gladiator and the rated solo shuffle title is Draconic Legend. There are plenty of other rewards to unlock as well.

What’s Next for Dragonflight: 2024 Roadmap

Blizzard released a roadmap for World of Warcraft late last year, laying out everything we can expect to see through the fall of 2024!

The War Within

At BlizzCon we saw the announcement of not just one, but three upcoming expansions for retail WoW. World of Warcraft: The War Within will mark the start of the Worldsoul Saga, followed by the Midnight and The Last Titan expansions.

The War Within is set to release sometime before the end of 2024. It will include a new race, the Earthen, a race of titan-forged dwarves playable by either faction. There will be new Hero Talent trees, offering additional options for character builds. There will also be new raids, dungeons, and zones, and a new type of content, delves, which can be played solo or in a small group.

The expansion entered its Beta testing stage on June 5th and now has a launch date: August 26th. You can sign up for the Beta online or pre-order the Epic Edition of the expansion for a guaranteed Beta spot. The Epic Edition also includes three days of early access at launch (beginning August 23rd).

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic

There’s plenty going on in Cataclysm Classic, between the current in-game events and the most recent content phase.

Current Events in Cataclysm Classic: June 18-24

Here are the limited-time events that are currently happening in Cataclysm Classic!

PvP Season 9

The latest season of arenas and the new rated battlegrounds began on May 28th.

Tier 11 Raids

Three new raids opened for level 85 characters as of May 30th: Bastion of Twilight, Blackwing Descent, and Throne of the Four Winds. These raids each have a 10- and 25-player version as well as Normal and Heroic difficulties. New to Classic, you are now able to swap between Heroic and Normal difficulties for different bosses in the same raid.

World Bosses

New world bosses began spawning across the world starting on June 4th. The same day, the Baradin Hold raid opened in the new Tol Barad PvP zone. The raid will start with just one boss, and more will be added as the expansion progresses.

Call to Arms: Twin Peaks & Alterac Valley

There are two Call to Arms happening simultaneously this week: Twin Peaks and Alterac Valley. From Friday through Tuesday, you’ll get extra Honor Points if you queue for these battlegrounds.

Next week’s Call to Arms: Eye of the Storm

Midsummer Fire Festival

The Midsummer Fire Festival holiday event arrives on June 21st and lasts through July 5th. Honor the flames across Azeroth (and other realms) for some special rewards and achievements. The event concludes with a Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th & 5th.

Darkmoon Faire

The Darkmoon Faire is back on Darkmoon Island from June 16th through 22nd. This event has been changed to occur every two weeks instead of once a month in WoW Classic. Head to Mulgore or Elwynn Forest to enter the portal and visit the Faire for all sorts of unique prizes and rewards.

Current Phase for Cataclysm Classic: Phase 1

Phase 1 of Cataclysm Classic released on May 20th! This closes the Wrath of the Lich King chapter and brings us into a whole new world (of Warcraft).

Revamped Zones

The entire world of Azeroth has been overhauled with an all new 1-60 leveling experience. High level characters can now fly in these zones just like you already could in Outland and Northrend.

New Races

A new race has been added to each faction for Cataclysm. Alliance get the Worgen while Horde get Goblins. Each of these races has an all-new starting zone experience. There are also some new class combinations available for existing races.

New Features

The new Transmogrification, Reforging, and Guild systems are now available in the game as well as the Archaeology profession.

New Talents and Abilities

Talent trees have been overhauled and all specializations have some new and overhauled talents and abilities. Stats have also been updated, with some stats being removed and others being altered, as well as a new stat called Mastery that works differently for every build.

New Level 80-85 Zones and Dungeons

You can now level up to 85 by exploring some new zones and taking on challenging new dungeons.

Darkmoon Faire

The Darkmoon Faire schedule has been changed for Cataclysm Classic: the Faire will now be available every two weeks instead of just once a month. You’ll be able to visit the event on Darkmoon Island again this week from June 16th through 22nd. Head over there to turn in your Darkmoon Cards or check out the many festivities.

What’s Next for Cataclysm Classic: 2024 Roadmap

Blizzard showed us their roadmap for WoW Classic at the end of last year, showing us what we can expect for all versions of the game in 2024.

Rise of the Zandalari

The next major patch, Rise of the Zandalari, is scheduled for late this summer. This patch will include the newly revamped Zul’Aman and Zul’Gurub instances, which will now be 5-player dungeons. There will also be some new quests introduced in the patch.

Rage of the Firelands

Following the Rise of the Zandalari, the Rage of the Firelands patch is currently scheduled for autumn of this year. This patch includes the Firelands raid with its Tier 12 loot and a new legendary weapons: Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest. We’ll also see many new quests and a new faction.

World of Warcraft Classic: Season of Discovery

WoW Classic: Season of Discovery is shaking up the vanilla WoW meta with some new class abilities and leveling phases. Here’s a look at the latest news for this game mode.

Current Events in Season of Discovery: June 18-24

Here’s a look at what’s happening this week Season of Discovery.

Darkmoon Faire

Head to Mulgore to visit the Darkmoon Faire from June 17th through 23rd. You can speak with Sayge to get one of her fortunes – and one of several very useful world buffs! Be sure to store it in a Chronoboon if you want to hold onto it. Chronoboons can be purchased from a Reagent Vendor.

Raid Schedule

The lockout for the new Sunken Temple raid is on a regular weekly schedule, resetting every Tuesday. This will be the case for all new raids going forward in Season of Discovery.

Current Phase for Season of Discovery: Phase 3

We’re currently in Phase 3 of this season of WoW Classic, which offers a new level cap of 50 and some new endgame content. Players will be able to learn many higher level abilities as well as purchase their first regular mounts.

Phase 3 adds a new raid to the game, a 20-player reimagining of Sunken Temple, one of the mid-level dungeons from vanilla WoW. The raid includes eight bosses and plenty of powerful new loot to gear up your level 50 character.

There are two new sets of rune engravings this phase for every class. These runes will go in the bracer and helm slots. We’ll have another round of discoveries to make!

Nightmare Incursions

There’s new content to access in the open world at each of the 4 Emerald Dream portals found across Azeroth. Complete repeatable missions and defeat enemies to earn reputation and powerful new rewards.

What’s Next for Season of Discovery: Phase 4

Phase 4 doesn’t have a release date yet, but we know that this will be the last leveling phase for Season of Discovery, bringing players to the level 60 cap. This phase will also bring new runes for every class, which are currently available to check out on the Public Test Realm.

New 20-player Raids: Molten Core and Onyxia’s Lair

One thing we do know about Phase 4 is that we will be seeing the return of the classic starting raids for World of Warcraft! These raids will be 20-player instead of 40 like their original versions, and we should see some other interesting changes as well.

World of Warcraft: Classic Hardcore

WoW Classic Hardcore is still going strong, having launched with all vanilla content already unlocked.

Self-Found Mode

A new self-found ruleset arrived in Hardcore on February 29. Self-found rules mean that you can only equip items you loot yourself. You won’t be able to get items by mail, trade, or the Auction House. This has commonly been used in player-made hardcore rules and will soon be officially supported in the game, although it will be completely optional.
