In GTA Online, you’re going to want to make sure you have a reliable firearm at your side. Not everyone you meet in GTA Online is going to be friendly and agreeable, and you’re going to want some decent firepower to make sure you stay protected. That’s where the MKII weapons come to play. Below, you’ll find out how to upgrade your weapons to MKII.
MKII weapons are upgraded variants of previously existing guns in the game. They are widely regarded as some of the best guns in the game, and they are something you’ll need to obtain eventually if you want to make it big. And in this guide, we are going to be showing you how to obtain them.
With that introduction out of the way, let’s get right into this guide!
What You Need to Obtain MKII Weapons

In order to get a MKII weapon, you’ll need two things: a weapon that can be upgraded into a MKII variant. As well as a Weapons Workshop you can upgrade the weapon at. Mk I weapons can be purchased from any Ammu-Nation storefront. Just keep in mind that not every weapon in the game can be upgraded, only a select few have the option to upgrade available. Those weapons are:
- Heavy Sniper Rifle
- Marksman Rifle
- Special Carbine
- Carbine Rifle
- Bullpup Rifle
- Assault Rifle
- SMG
- Combat MG
- Pump Shotgun
- Pistol
- SNS Pistol
- Heavy Revolver
Where to Upgrade to MKII Weapons in GTA Online
As for where you can find a Weapons Workshop, there are several places in the game. These locations include:
- MOC
- Terrabyte
- Avenger
- Kosatka Submarine
- Agency
- Arcade (only with a gunman recruited)
- Arena Workshop
- The Freakshop
All of these locations–except for the Freakshop–require a purchase in order for you to unlock. You can purchase the MOC, Terrabyte, Avenger, and Kosatka Submarine from the in-game website Warstock Cache & Carry. You can also purchase the arcade from Maze Bank Foreclosures, and the Arena Workshop from the Arena Wars website. But if you have a friend who owns any of the previously mentioned properties, you can simply go to their property instead.
How to Upgrade Your Weapons

Once you have a weapon that can be upgraded to MKII as well as a place to upgrade it at, simply go there and walk up to the Weapons Workshop. Interact with it using the key/button prompt that appears on your screen. This will open the UI from where you can upgrade your weapons. Select the gun that you want to upgrade and you will pay a large sum to upgrade the weapon.
Once you’ve paid the sum, the weapon will be upgraded and now you can start modifying it! There are many, many different things you can add on. You can add on special scopes to your sniper rifle (I recommend the thermal scope, as it makes seeing targets easier). You can also get bigger magazines/clips for various guns. But the most exciting thing you can add are special ammo types.
Special ammo types can add unique effects to your bullets, such as better armor penetration, fire damage, and even explosive rounds! Generally speaking though, the only one really worth getting (with some exceptions) are the explosive rounds. These are a must-get for your heavy sniper MKII as they turn it into an excellent anti-aircraft gun, perfect for defending yourself from griefers in jets.
In addition to more practical upgrades, there are also unique cosmetics you can purchase. This includes special tints, weapons skills, and other customization options. Feel free to play around with all the different upgrades/cosmetics, just be sure to note that some of them can get pretty expensive.
