Open-wheel cars were once a very highly requested feature that many people wanted to see added to GTA Online. Come early 2020, you were finally able to obtain an open-wheel car in GTA Online and participate in races dedicated to them. The update as well as others that came out that same year gave us a total of four different open-wheel vehicles to choose from.
But out of all these four, which one is the best? Which one is the worst? Which of the open-wheel cars are worth getting? Should you even get more than one? We’ll be answering these questions and much more in this article ranking every open-wheel car in GTA Online.
Open-Wheel Cars Overview
Before we dive right into our ranking, let’s go over a few things about open-wheel vehicles and what makes them so special compared to the other cars you can get in the game.
Firstly, what is an open-wheel vehicle, exactly? It’s a type of specialized race car used in Formula 1 races. They are designed to be very aerodynamic and fast, making them very fast and able to handle speeds of about 120 MPH. Each open-wheel car also has a boost that you can activate to give you some extra speed!
These cars can only seat one passenger, which can be a problem if you are using these vehicles for free-roam. In the special open-wheel races, however, this is a non-issue. Speaking of which, open-wheel races can only be played using open-wheel cars. If you’ve purchased one, you can customize it and take it to this game mode to race, or you can instead choose a non-customized one before starting the race.
Additionally, these cars are very fragile and can not take much damage before breaking down. They can be blown up easily by explosives, and have a habit of crumbling like paper when you crash into objects with them. During open-wheel races, you may have to pull over and have your car repaired during the race. If you don’t, you might pop a tire or spin out of control and crash!
Lastly, these cars are notably expensive compared to most vehicles in the game. They can reach price tags of over $3,000,000! Because of this, I do not recommend getting one if you’re new to the game, as your money can be better spent elsewhere. These cars are really for more high-level players who have money to burn.
Every Open-Wheel Car in GTA Online, Ranked Worst to Best
What are we waiting for? Let’s dive right into this ranking!
Ocelot R88
First up on this list, we have the Ocelot R88! It’s a really good car that anyone would be lucky to have. However, some of its stats just don’t compete with the other vehicles on this list.
Speaking of which, its speed (according to YouTuber Broughy1322) is 122 MPH. This is a pretty good speed. It’s actually tied with the best open-wheel car in the game, so you’re really not missing out in that category if you get this car.
As for the car’s handling, it’s fine, but just not as good as the other vehicles on this ranking. The Ocelot still has good acceleration, helping you stay up to top speed.
It’s still a really good car overall, but I don’t see much of a reason to buy this one over some of the other open-wheel cars. It’s not the cheapest, or the fastest, or the best at anything really. This car can be purchased for a price of $3,115,000, which actually isn’t too bad when compared to the other vehicles on this list.
Progen PR4
The Progen PR4 is up next. Not many people use this car compared to the other open-wheel vehicles, and I can understand why. Its price tag is a tad bit higher and it doesn’t have as great stats as some of the other vehicles on this list.
The top speed for this vehicle is 120 miles per hour. This is a pretty high speed when compared to most cars in the game. But for an open-wheel car? It’s a bit on the low side.
But speed isn’t everything. This car does have really good braking and decent handling. This means that if you are not too experienced with racing, this might not be a bad beginner car for you. I would recommend that you play a race using this vehicle before you purchase it first, just to see how it feels for you (you don’t need to own any of the open-wheel cars to use them in races: you just can’t customize them).
This car is the most expensive one in its category, at $3,515,000. This higher price tag just isn’t justified with its stats, in my opinion.
Declasse DR1
The Declasse DR1 is the second-best open-wheel car in GTA Online. Featuring a very high top speed of 124 miles per hour, this is by far the fastest vehicle in the open-wheel category.
I recommend using this one on tracks with straight and long roads and very few turns, as this environment is where it shines the best. Still, even with its top speed, it was not enough to make first place on this list.
The other stats on this vehicle are still pretty good. It feels nice to dive and does okay around turns, so it’s a solid car overall. However, its overall stats are still beaten out by the next car on this list.
One thing that this car really has going for it is the price tag. You can purchase it for only $2,997,000. This is a really fair price tag for what you are getting. I recommend buying this car if you are on a budget. But if you ask me, most players would be better off saving up for the best open-wheel car…
Benefactor BR8
In first place, we have none other than the Benefactor BR8! This is widely regarded by most of the GTA Online community to be the best open-wheel car in the entire game. I’ve been using it for a long-while and it’s my go-to car for open-wheel races.
It features great speed, capping at about 122 miles per hour. This means it doesn’t have the best top speed out of all the open-wheel cars, but it’s pretty close. It more than makes up for this slightly lower speed with its stats in other areas.
It has great acceleration, great handling, and powerful breaks. All these features make the car more versatile, and its stats as a whole are better than the other three cars on this list. Because of all this, in most circumstances, this is the car you are going to want to be driving down the track with.
You can buy this car for a total price of $3,400,000. It’s incredibly expensive, but well worth getting if you only want one open-wheel car.
