Gnar is a scrappy, prehistoric Yordle that transforms into a Mega beast when he gets… hangry for blood. Honestly, I’m a huge fan of his base model. It’s cute, captures his lore, and has a great color scheme. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to spruce up his looks every once in a while, which is why we’ll be ranking all of the skins for Gnar in LoL to pick out the best one!
There are plenty of fantastic Gnar skins out there, with each bringing something different to the table. Some up his cuteness by tenfold, others honor his inner rage, and there are even skins that transport you to otherworldly realms.
We’ll take a close look at the best Gnar skins in League of Legends below, ranking them from worst to best. Let’s dive in!
All Gnar Skins in LoL, Ranked Worst to Best
Obviously, this list is based on opinions, so don’t take it as the end all be all. If you really like a certain skin, all the more power to you!
SSG Gnar
- Release Date: July 20, 2018
- Cost: 1350 RP
SSG Gnar is… nightmare fuel. While the actual character model design is pretty neat, and I do love the color choices, there is one thing I can’t look past – the Mini form’s facial expression. It honestly looks like something straight out of a horror movie. The eyes are too wide, too cartoonish, and way too creepy up close.
If you’re able to look past the eyes though? It’s still a solid skin and a good pick for any SSG fans out there, especially if you want that signed recall. Plus, the Mega Gnar form is honestly top-tier and gives off a warrior deity vibe.
El León Gnar
- Release Date: June 1, 2016
- Cost: 750 RP
While this skin isn’t as flashy as Gnar’s other skins, it’s still a solid pick, especially if you take into account the budget-friendly 750 RP price tag. It essentially transforms Gnar into a small but mighty wrestler, complete with a black eye mask and wrestling belt.
And when Gnar “rages out”? He transforms into a rage-filled lion. The design looks totally badass and really makes you feel like an unkillable god when you land a 5-man CC.
However, I can’t give El León a higher ranking than this; it’s a little too niche and gimmicky for my liking.
Snow Day Gnar
- Release Date: December 10, 2015
- Cost: 975 RP
I’m not usually a fan of Snow Day skins — they tend to be too festive for my inner Scrooge self. However, Snow Day Gnar is a skin that would win over any Grinch or Scrooge.
It gives you the best of both worlds: a cute cuddly floofball wrapped up in winter attire, and a terrifying snow beast that would put even the abominable snowman to shame. Riot really took the “cute AND deadly” vibe literally here.
While I absolutely love the character model, I’m not too won over by the animations. They’re a little underwhelming for my liking. Sure, you now get to throw frozen penguins at your opponents, but the other attacks aren’t flashy or particularly unique. They just feel like his original attack animations with a blue, icy filter. At 975 RP though? I can’t exactly fault it!
Dino Gnar
- Release Date: August 13, 2014
- Cost: 975 RP
Yep. As you can probably imagine, Dino Gnar is essentially Gnar in a dinosaur onesie. It’s cute and makes him look like a character straight out of Toy Story. It’s also downright hilarious; just imagine the enemy’s final moments being killed by a Yordle in a onesie.
However, Dino Gnar has a lot more going for it besides the Mini Gnar character model. The Mega Gnar form transforms you into a roarin’ dinosaur who, in the animations, throws buildings and smashes down helicopters. It’s satisfying, to say the least.
While I am not entirely won over by the green color scheme, the fact that it honors Gnar’s prehistoric roots definitely makes the skin worthy of the #5 spot. Plus, the rage indicator is incredibly clear on this skin, which can help you better manage your engage times.
Super Galaxy Gnar
- Release Date: October 16, 2017
- Cost: 1350 RP
Rocket Raccoon is one of the most loved Marvel characters out there; he’s badass, hilarious, and a total bundle of fluff. So, it should come as no surprise that Riot took some… slight inspiration from Marvel and created their own fluffy, sci-fi mercenary!
Super Galaxy Gnar is everything any Marvel fan could possibly want. He sports a bounty hunter outfit in his Mini Gnar form, equipped with a tech-powered pistol, and his Mega form is him piloting a mecha machine. His attack animations have also received a sci-fi style upgrade, with a futuristic boomerang and his jump turning him into a sonic-like entity.
The best part though? The recall. It looks like something out of a comedy movie, with Gnar accidentally succeeding at life. I won’t spoil this gag too much, so definitely check out this skin in your own time.
Gentleman Gnar
- Release Date: July 14, 2015
- Cost: 975 RP
Rage and etiquette don’t exactly pair well together. Well, they shouldn’t pair well together, but Gentleman Gnar has proved me wrong! Gnar looks totally dapper in this skin, sporting a top hat, striped suit, and golden monocle.
His animations have also received a fancy (and equally hilarious) upgrade. His boomerang is now a cane, his recall is him fumbling around with a pocket watch, and in his Mega form he throws Big Bens at his enemies.
This skin won’t suit everyone’s tastes, but it has a special place in my heart. It’s truly one of the only few skins that makes me laugh time and time again. I never get tired of the irony of Gnar, the least gentleman-like champion in the game, dressed up like he’s cosplaying Sherlock Holmes!
Astronaut Gnar
- Release Date: May 28, 2020
- Cost: 1350 RP
Astronaut Gnar is truly out of this world — it’s jam-packed with intergalactic goodness, homages to the sci-fi genre, and smooth animations. In the mini form, Gnar rocks an adorable spacesuit, with a helmet that even accommodates his fluffy ears. In Mega form, Gnar transforms into an alien-like creature that resembles a Titan from the Final Space franchise.
Unsurprisingly, the animations also immerse you in the space theme; I’m talking devouring UFOs and throwing holographic boomerangs at your enemies. And while the animations are flashy and stray far from Gnar’s base model animations, I still find that they suit Gnar well and honor his character. They also have great visual clarity and nothing feels clunky, both elements that are sure to help you accumulate LP.
However, despite its endless amount of pros, I can’t give Astronaut Gnar the top spot. There is one Gnar skin that just manages to wow me in every possible way. If you’re a Gnar main, you probably already know which skin I’m referring to: Elderwood Gnar.
Elderwood Gnar
- Release Date: January 6, 2022
- Cost: 1350 RP
Elderwood Gnar is a legendary skin masquerading as a 1350 RP skin and easily his best one in LoL. The character model is packed with an impressive amount of detail, the sound effects are like music to my ears, and the attacks are all unique and have fantastic visual clarity. Even the splash art is total eye candy.
The skin essentially transforms Gnar into an ethereal, forest creature — think Studio Ghibli vibes — who sports a powerful bone mask. In Mega form, Gnar transforms into a forest guardian, with his bone mask “consuming” him and becoming a part of his actual body. This transformation is incredibly creative and it plays out beautifully in-game.
The attack animations are also teeming with plenty of plant-themed, mystical elements, textures, and patterns; they truly turn the Rift into an otherworldly battleground in combat.
What really makes this skin deserving of the #1 spot though? The recall animations. Both of them are equal parts magical and hilarious.
Oh, and also the fact that there are plenty of gorgeous chromas to explore, many of which introduce whole new elements, like bi-colored eyes and different mask patterns.
Join the High Ground!
While Gnar doesn’t have as many skins as some other champions — ahem, Lux, Ahri, and Miss Fortune — the skins on offer are all well-designed and there’s plenty of variety.
