How to Level up Fast in Genshin Impact

There’s a lot to level up in Genshin Impact. Adventure Rank, World Level, Friendship Level, Trust Rank, etc. It’s a lot to keep track of. To help you out with the most important parts we wrote this guide on how to level up in Genshin Impact (as fast as possible ideally).

We’re mainly going to focus on leveling up specific characters and their Talent levels. When it comes to dealing damage in game, these are the levels that are going to matter the most.

How Leveling Works in Genshin Impact

The first thing you’ll want to do to make your characters stronger in Genshin Impact is level them up. Every character starts at level 1 and can be leveled up to a max of level 90. To increase a character’s level, they need to gain Character EXP. Character EXP can be gained through various means which we will discuss a little later on.

While you’re leveling up your character, keep in mind that they will hit level caps every 10-20 levels. Those caps come at certain milestones and can only be removed through Ascension. Ascending a character will require more and more materials as you progress through Genshin Impact and will happen more frequently as they grow stronger.

The first level cap that can be removed via ascension comes at level 20, the next at level 40, then 50, 60, 70, and finally 80.

Usually gaining a large amount of Character EXP at once is the fastest way to level up. It does come with one minor drawback. If your character hits a level cap, they won’t be able to gain anymore until they are Ascended. Which means if your character is at level 39 for example, you probably want to avoid giving them too much Character EXP. Once they hit level 40, any extra Character EXP they get will be wasted until they are ascended.

That’s why you’ll want to keep an eye on your character’s level and ascension caps before giving them too much Character EXP. No point in wasting it if you don’t have to.

Overall, the fastest way to level up your characters in Genshin Impact is going to be stuffing them full with EXP items. It’s not the only way, but it is by far going to save you the most time.

EXP Books

When leveling up a character through items, you will need two things: experience books and Mora

Mora is pretty easy to come by and you can get it from doing almost anything in Genshin Impact. Fighting monsters, opening chests, completing commissions, and participating in events are all going to reward you with Mora. Many of those methods will also reward you with experience books too.

There are three kinds of experience books in the game. The first is the Wanderer’s Advice book. It is a 2-star item which gives a single character 1,000 Character EXP. The second book is the Adventurer’s Experience book. It is a 3-star item which gives a character 5,000 Character EXP. The final experience book is the Hero’s Wit. It is a 4-star item which gives a character 20,000 Character EXP.

Increasing Character EXP with the above materials will cost 1 Mora for every 5 points of Character EXP. While it does get expensive, if you want to know how to level up fast in Genshin Impact, using EXP books in mass is the way to do it.

Now that you know how to level up fast in Genshin Impact, let’s talk about the logistics of actually doing it.

To fully level up a character from level 1 to level 90, players will need roughly 8,358,300 Character EXP. That’s just for one character.

If you want to know how many EXP books to level 90 in Genshin Impact, that translates into:

  • 415 Hero’s Wit  (4-star books)
  • 11 Adventurer’s Experience (3-star books)
  • 12 Wanderer’s Advice (2-star books)

You’ll also need at least 1,673,400 Mora just for leveling up. (That does not include the Mora needed to Ascend characters).

Ley Line Outcrops

Ley Line Outcrops give you the most EXP books in Genshin Impact

The best and quickest way to get EXP books in Genshin Impact is via Ley Line Outcrops. Specifically Blossoms of Revelation

Each nation will have two Ley Line Outcrops at all times. One Blossom of Revelation and one Blossom of Wealth. Collecting rewards from a Ley Line Outcrop will cause a new one of the same type to spawn somewhere else in the nation you are currently in. Outcrops have a set spawning rotation in each nation. Meaning there are only so many places they spawn in and they do not spawn anywhere else.

In order to collect rewards from Ley Line Outcrops, all you need to do is head to one and interact with it. Blue icons indicate a Blossom of Revelation (which is what you’re aiming for) while yellow icons indicate Blossoms of Wealth.

Interaction with a Ley Line Outcrop will spawn enemies. After defeating the spawned enemies, you’ll be able to head back to the Outcrop and spend 20 Original Resin or 1 Condensed Resin to obtain your EXP books.

Ley Line Rewards

Keep in mind that the rewards will vary depending on your World Level. Higher World Level means more rewards along with tougher enemies.

Players with a World Level of 4 and higher will receive Adventurer’s Experience and Hero’s Wit books as rewards from Blossoms of Revelation.

Blossoms of Revelation in World Levels of 0 to 1 will reward both Wanderer’s Advice and Adventurer’s Experience. They reward a higher number of just Adventurer’s Experience with no Wanderer’s Advice items at World Level 2 and 3.

Rewards are of course doubled when using Condensed Resin over Original Resin but the total Resin cost remains the same.

Ley Line Outcrops will also reward players with 100 Adventure EXP and 10-20 Companionship EXP which can be used to increase Adventure Rank and Friendship Levels respectively

Purchasing EXP Books

Another source of EXP books is via shop menus. Normal shops in Genshin Impact won’t typically sell EXP books but you can find them at special shops.

After reaching Trust Rank 8, the Realm Depot within a player’s Serenitea Pot will sell 20 Hero’s Wit and 100 Wanderer’s Advice books weekly. Players will need Realm Currency in order to purchase them so make sure you stock up before trying to buy them.

Limited quantities can also be purchased via Paimon’s Bargains via the menu shop. 300 Adventurer’s Experience books are available monthly in the Stardust Exchange beginning at Adventure Rank 10.

Other Methods

Events are a good source of EXP

There are a few other ways to get your hands on some EXP books. Opening up treasure chests and obtaining them through event rewards are going to be the most fruitful ways to get more EXP books. Though there are also some others if you need just a few more on short notice.

Players can get a chance to score some extra EXP books once a week with their Parametric Transformer. Possible rewards from the Transformer include 2 Hero’s Wit and 3-4 Adventurer’s Experience books… though specific rewards are not guaranteed, so you definitely don’t want to rely on this method.

A more reliable method than the Parametric Transformer is claiming rewards from the Spiral Abyss.

Each chamber of each floor in the Spiral Abyss will reward players with a bounty. Those bounties all include Mora, EXP books, Mystic Enhancement Ore, and Domain Reliquaries. As you progress through the Abyss floors, the enemies grow stronger while the rewards increase accordingly.

The first eight floors of the Abyss Spiral will grant players varying amounts of Adventurer’s Advice and Wanderer’s Advice. Once you get to the ninth floor and on, you’ll still get the Adventurer’s Advice but you’ll also start getting some Hero’s Wit too.

Unfortunately you can only claim rewards for the first eight floors of the Abyss once but floor rewards for nine through 12 will refresh every 1st and 16th of the month. So nearly every two weeks.

Each Battle Pass period will also reward players with a total of 27 Adventurer’s Experience and 36 Hero’s Wit. At least as long as you reach a Battle Pass level of 47. An additional 126 Hero’s Wit can be obtained on top of the other EXP books if you feel like shelling out $10 USD for the Gnostic Hymn rewards.

Most Efficient & Fastest Method to Gain EXP Books

Completing events and quests is the most efficient way to get EXP books.

While Ley Line Outcrops are definitely the fastest method to leveling up in Genshin Impact, it’s usually worth it to get them through other means

Original Resin is a precious and limited resource, so it’s smart to use it first on materials that can’t be obtained without spending it. Since EXP books can be gained through other means, it’s usually a last resort to gain them through Blossoms of Revelation.

The best way to gain EXP books is generally to complete quests and participate in events. Events especially – they don’t tend to require too much time while yielding generous rewards.

Quests and Combat

Quests and combat barely give you EXP in Genshin Impact

While it is technically possible to level up characters without using EXP books, it takes infinitely longer.

The amount of Character EXP dropped by enemies is so small it’s not worth trying to level up through combat alone. Rewards from enemies also vary too, so the amount of Character EXP you can obtain is inconsistent at best.

The same can be said for completing quests.

Obtaining straight Character EXP is very rarely worth it so we recommend going for EXP books if you want to see any sort of measurable growth. If you’re okay sticking at the same level for weeks or more on a single character though, then feel free to start grinding away at those HIlichurls.

Luckily quest rewards commonly include EXP books. Which means you can avoid spending Resin on Ley Line Outcrops unless you’re looking to level up really fast.

Talent Leveling

Aside from the base character level, Genshin Impact also allows players to level up each character’s combat abilities (known as Talents) by spending unique talent materials. Talent leveling is a separate process from character leveling but is somewhat related.

Each character has three Talents that can be increased up to level 10. While there are some ways to increase Talent level further (namely through increasing the character’s constellation level), the level costs remain the same.

The combat Talents: Normal Attack, Elemental Skill, and Elemental Burst can each be leveled up separately from character level. Talent levels do cap along with Character Levels though and can only be leveled up fully when a character reaches level 80 and is fully Ascended.

Talent Leveling Materials

You'll need specific materials to level up your talents.

In general Talent leveling works a bit differently from character leveling. Talent levels don’t use experience books, instead they use Talent books. These books can be obtained through certain domains as well as through events, treasure chests, and quests. You’ll also need a lot of Mora as well, in addition to certain weekly boss and normal enemy drop items.

The specific items and Talent books you’ll need for Talent leveling vary by character. Most of the materials you’ll need can be found in the home region of whatever character you’re trying to level up but that’s not always the case.

For example, despite being from Liyue the 4-star character Yaoyao requires the Daka’s Bell item to fully level up her Talents. This 5-star boss drop item can only be obtained from the Joururi Workshop Trounce Domain in Sumeru.

When farming for Talent books, be mindful of which day of the week it is. Talent Domains have a rotating reward schedule. That means specific Talent books can only be obtained three out of seven days per week. In other words a Talent book can always be obtained from Talent Domains but the books available will differ from day to day.

Talent books are usually available Mon/Thurs/Sun, Tues/Fri/Sun, or Wed/Sat/Sun.

All Talent books can be obtained on Sundays, just make sure you choose the appropriate Domain level. Otherwise you may spend Resin on items you don’t need.

Each character will require the following to fully level one Talent:

  • 1,652,500 Mora
  • 6 1-star enemy item drop
  • 22 2-star enemy item drop
  • 31 3-star enemy item drop
  • 3 Teachings of _____ (2-star Talent material)
  • 21 Guide to _____ (3-star Talent material)
  • 38 Philosophies of _____ (4-star Talent material)
  • 6 Trounce Domain Boss Items (5-star Talent material)
  • 1 Crown of Insight (5-star Talent material)
