How To Get 5-Star Artifacts in Genshin Impact

You most likely noticed early on that artifacts in Genshin Impact have varying rarities, indicated by their different color backgrounds. Since artifacts provide the bulk of your characters’ stats, it’s only natural that you want the strongest (5-star) ones possible. In today’s article, we’ll be going over how to get 5-star artifacts and the best way to farm them in Genshin Impact.

Let’s get started!

When Can You Get 5-Star Artifacts

When you’re first starting out and are at a low Adventure Rank, you’ll be limited to at best 4-star (purple background) artifacts. Even then, those will be rather rare.

You likely won’t see your first 5-star artifact (orange background) until you reach Adventure Rank 35 and World Level 3. At this point, you have a chance of obtaining one from defeating and looting the weekly bosses. However, you’re limited to only artifacts from either the Gladiator’s Finale or Wandering Troupe sets.

While these artifact sets aren’t bad by any stretch, you’re going to want 5-star artifacts from more specialized and stronger sets. Unfortunately, you won’t have access to those until you reach Adventure Rank 45. We’ll go into more details about that in a moment.

Prior to reaching Adventure Rank 45, we recommend spending your Original Resin primarily on getting ascension materials (character, weapon, talents) for your main team.

Should You Level Up Your Lower Rarity Artifacts?

Yes. The goal is to reach Adventure Rank 45 as soon as possible, so having enhanced stats and bonuses from weaker artifacts is still extremely useful. Being able to keep up with and conquer the challenges along your journey is critical for quickly advancing your rank.

Besides, you can always feed those leveled-up, lower-rarity artifacts into 5-star artifacts for huge chunks of artifact EXP. Just make sure not to sell (by deleting from your inventory) any of your leveled-up artifacts, as you won’t regain any of the artifact EXP you’ve invested in them.

How & Where to Get 5-Star Artifacts

Currently, there are four ways to get 5-star artifacts in Genshin Impact, and we’ll go over each in detail.

Weekly Bosses

Minimum Requirement: Adventure Rank 35 and World Level 3

There are currently seven weekly bosses in the game that can be defeated and looted once a week (resetting at 4 AM on Monday of your server’s time). You can unlock these bosses by progressing through the main story and completing certain characters’ story quests (namely Razor, Zhongli, and Raiden Shogun).

As we mentioned earlier, this will most likely be your earliest encounter with 5-star artifacts. However, as we also mentioned above, you’ll be limited to only receiving a 5-star artifact from either the Gladiator’s Finale or Wandering Troupe sets.

While you’re still climbing the Adventure Ranks, these will be quite potent. It’s in your interest to level them up, especially if you have a good set of sub-stats on them. Again, even if the stats are sub-par, you can always use them as EXP fodder for better artifacts later.

Once you have access to better artifact farming options, the only real reason to continue looting weekly bosses is for their unique talent ascension materials, weapon billets, and (maybe) their character ascension gems. If you’re solely interested in artifacts, you’ll get more value using your resin on artifact domains.

World Bosses

Minimum Requirement: Adventure Rank 40 and World Level 5

World bosses can also drop a 5-star artifact once you reach Adventure Rank 40 and World Level 5. Unfortunately, just like weekly bosses, you’re still limited to only artifacts from the Gladiator’s Finale or Wandering Troupe sets.

However, once you reach Adventure Rank 55 and World Level 8 in Genshin Impact, you’re actually guaranteed a 5-star artifact from looting a world boss. Note that you’re still limited to the same two sets of artifacts.

If you’ve held off on fully ascending all your characters and have reached this rank, then you can get a bit more value from world bosses. Of course, by this point, you’ll probably be using the artifact solely as artifact EXP fodder. But value is value, so no real complaints here.

Artifact Domains

Minimum Requirement: Adventure Rank 45

This will be your main method of getting 5-star artifacts in Genshin Impact. Upon reaching Adventure Rank 45, you’ll unlock access to the highest difficulty level (Level 90) for artifact domains. You do not need to complete Ascension Quest 3 or raise the World Level to access this option.

Every time you complete and spend Original Resin on a Level 90 artifact domain, you are guaranteed at least one 5-star artifact. If you’re really lucky, you can even get two 5-star artifacts! The only real problem is what artifact sets are available in the particular domain you’re running.

Every artifact domain in Genshin Impact has two specific sets unique to each it. In some cases, this is fine — both sets are useful and will eventually find purpose on one of your characters. In other cases, only one of the sets is desirable.

An example is the Hidden Palace of Zhou Formula domain. It offers the highly-desirable Crimson Witch of the Flames set (perfect for most Pyro users), but also the Lavawalker set (very niche). If you’re unlucky, all your domain runs could result in Lavawalker artifacts.

Thankfully, the Mystic Offering system exists to help alleviate some of this issue for certain domains. We’ll cover that in depth in a moment.

Spiral Abyss

Minimum Requirement: None (Technically)

We’re including this method, because it exists – not because anyone actually relies on it. Upon completing the third chamber of Floor 6 and above in the Spiral Abyss, you’ll obtain Domain Reliquary: Tier 1 treasure boxes in the Precious Item tab of your inventory.

Opening one of these boxes will get you a guaranteed 5-star artifact from whatever set is listed on the box. The sets available from these boxes changes periodically each time the Abyss Spiral resets.

While the first eight floors of the Spiral Abyss are one-time deals, Floors 9–12 reset every two weeks with new rewards. There’s no requirement to tackle the Spiral Abyss, but trying to successfully complete it at low levels is nigh impossible. By the time you can beat the relevant floor, you’ll probably have access to better 5-star artifacts.

Mystic Offering (Re-Rolling Artifacts)

Once you reach Adventure Rank 45 (coincidentally the same time you unlock access to 5-star artifact farming in domains), you’ll gain access to the Mystic Offering system.

This system allows you to sacrifice any three 5-star artifacts for a new 5-star artifact from your chosen set. There are currently fourteen artifact sets you can re-roll for, most of them tied to the older elemental sets.

To access the system, simply head to any Alchemy Crafting Bench and click on the third tab at the top of the screen. We strongly recommend using the system primarily to roll for artifact sets that are tied to a less desirable set (like the Crimson Witch/Lavawalker example above), so you don’t have to risk wasting your Original Resin.

Unfortunately, not every artifact set is available through this system, but we expect miHoYo to steadily add older sets as the game continues to progress. Especially since the system originally only had four options.
