Elden Ring has an absolutely MASSIVE number of ways you can take your build. It features a huge number of weapons and spells that give you a huge degree of control over how you play the game. Enter Dragon Communion Incantations, one of the most unique incantation categories out there in Elden Ring.
These types of spells allow you to channel your inner dragon, manifesting powers that will allow you to do things like breathe deadly fire, roar to intimidate enemies or use a draconic claw to deal high damage to your foes. Here in this guide, we’ll be listing ten of our favorite spells from this class.
How to Unlock Dragon Communion Incantations
There are a few things that you should know before you set out to obtain any of these spells.
First, allow me to explain how exactly you obtain a Dragon Communion Incantation. You will want to head to one of two locations: either the Cathedral of Dragon Communion or the Church of Dragon Communion. From either of these locations, you can purchase incantations.
The cathedral is for buying weaker spells, while more powerful and strong ones can be bought from the church. In order to purchase an incantation, you will need to use a dragon heart. This is a special item that is dropped whenever you defeat a dragon or wyrm boss.
Additionally, some incantations will be locked, and you can only unlock them by killing a specific boss. We will explain which boss needs to be defeated for each spell in this article.
10. Greyoll’s Roar
Greyoll’s Roar is a powerful incantation that will deal damage to all nearby enemies and debuffs them. When an enemy is affected by this incantation, they will suffer significant debuffs to their defense and offensive stats, meaning that they’ll do less damage to you and take more damage in return.
This incantation requires 28 Faith as well as 17 points of Arcane in order to use. The Faith stat is not that bad, but keep in mind you can get this incantation fairly early on in the game. Though by the time you find it, you should be able to have reached 28 Faith by then.
To unlock this incantation, you will need to kill the mini-boss Elder Dragon Greyoll. You can find them in Caelid, near Fort Faroth. Defeating her is relatively easy, but she has a lot of health and it can be time-consuming to take her on in the early game.
9. Dragonclaw
The Dragonclaw incantation is a pretty underrated and underutilized incantation that I feel more players should use. Upon activation, you will manifest a powerful dragon claw that you can use to swipe at enemies, dealing high physical damage to them.
This is a great melee weapon that can complement your playstyle if your character mostly uses ranged weapons in battle. It does good damage and only costs 24 FP.
To use this spell, you will need to have at least 17 points of Faith and at least 13 points of Arcane. This is a relatively low cost, and you don’t need to kill any specific bosses to unlock this spell for purchase.
All you need to do is buy it from the Church of Dragon Communion. In summary, you should be able to get this incantation early on in the game with relative ease.
8. Dragonfire
If you want to breathe fire just like a dragon, then Dragonfire is the incantation for you. This spell when activated will send out a strong blast of fire magic directly in front of you. This will allow you to deal tons of damage to enemies, especially ones that are weak to fire damage.
It will consume 28 FP when you cast it, which isn’t too bad, especially for the amount of DPS that you end up dealing.
If you want this spell, you are going to need 15 Faith and 12 Arcane. This is one of the lower stat requirements out of most of the other incantations in the game. Another nice thing about this spell is that you don’t need to kill any specific dragon bosses to get it.
It will be available from the Church of Dragon Communion right at the start of the game, meaning it’s a great incantation to get early on in your playthrough.
7. Dragonice
Dragonice is an ice-based attack that will deal loads of frost damage to enemies. This breath attack does good damage on its own, but the ice-element is what really makes it stand out.
If you fill up an enemy’s meter with ice magic, then they’ll receive the frostbite status effect, which will deal damage and cause them to be more susceptible to damage for a short period of time.
You will need at least 15 Faith and 12 Arcane in order to use this breath-ability. It does not require the player to find and kill any specific dragon bosses in the game.
You can purchase it immediately from the Cathedral of Dragon Communion.
6. Theodorix’s Magma
Next is Theodorix’s Magma, a powerful incantation that will allow you to shoot white hot magma out of your mouth. When you activate the ability, the magma will quickly fill up the areas surrounding where you’re currently standing.
This is a really great ability for dealing with groups of enemies. It can be especially handy if you are surrounded and need some breathing room.
The stat requirements are not bad, sitting at 21 points of Faith and 14 points of Arcane. This is fairly low when compared to some of the other incantations in the game, which is pretty nice.
To unlock this breath, you will need to kill the boss Great Wyrm Theodorix. Once that is finished, you can purchase the spell from the communion at the Cathedral.
5. Rotten Breath
Rotten Breath will allow you to shoot out a cloud of toxic mist that is infected with the scarlet rot. When it comes into contact with enemies, it will do damage as well as give them a high chance of being afflicted by the scarlet rot.
Once they have this status effect applied to them, they will begin to slowly take damage over time, wearing down their health. As you can imagine, this is great for bosses and any enemies with large health pools.
To use this incantation, you will need 15 points of Faith and at least 12 Arcane. This is one of the lowest attribute requirements out of any other dragon incantation, making it ideal to get in the early game. Unlike most of the incantations on this list, you don’t need to kill any specific dragons in order to use this incantation.
You can simply go to the Dragon Communion Alter at the Cathedral and purchase it from the get-go.
4. Smarag’s Glintstone Breath
Up next on this list of the best Dragon Communion Incantations in Elden Ring, we have Smarag’s Glintstone Breath. This is a more powerful variation of the Glintstone Breath that deals a high amount of magic damage.
This is definitely one of the best ways to deal magic damage in Elden Ring, and it’s great if you’re struggling against a boss that is weak to magic.
To use this spell, you will need a total of 23 Faith as well as 15 Arcane. This is similar to several other Dragon spells in the game, so you shouldn’t have a problem getting these numbers if you are doing a dragon-incantation build.
Before you can purchase this spell at the Cathedral, you’ll have to first fight and kill the Glintstone Dragon Smarag. He can be found inside the Crystalline Woods, which is located in Liurnia of the Lakes.
3. Agheel’s Flame
What good is a list of dragon spells if one of them doesn’t let you breathe fire? This powerful spell lets you do just that. Upon activation, you’ll send out a powerful fire breath attack that will deal high amounts of fire damage to enemies.
This is a great spell to have when going up against bosses who are weak to fire, but it’s still really powerful in pretty much every situation. The spell requires 23 Faith and 15 Arcane in order for it to be used.
If you want to unlock this incantation, first you will have to fight and kill Flying Dragon Agheel. This is a boss that you can find very early on in the game. He is located in Limgrave, which is where the game begins. This boss can be difficult to take on if you just started your play-through, but experienced players should be able to take him down without too much effort.
2. Borealis’s Mist
The Borealis’s Mist incantation will allow you to send out a powerful blast of frost magic to enemies. This has a high chance of dealing the Frostbite status effect to enemies, which is one of the best in the game.
When an enemy is afflicted with it, it will not only deal extra damage to an enemy but will also increase all further damage they receive by exactly 20%. This is a great incantation to use at the start of a boss fight, before switching over to a melee weapon or a different incantation.
This incantation needs at least 23 Faith and 15 Arcane in order to be used. To unlock it, first find and kill the dragon boss Borealis the Freezing Fog. This boss can be found in the Mountaintop of The Giants. He is standing on a vast frozen lake, which you will walk by while walking up the mountain to the Forge of the Giants.
1. Ekzykes’s Decay
Ekzykes’s Decay is a really powerful, high-damage incantation and easily the best Dragon Communion Incantation in Elden Ring. When activated, the user will send out a thick cloud of scarlet rot to deal damage and infect anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in your path.
You can charge up this incantation before launching it, which will increase how long the spell lasts. This is a highly effective spell for going up against bosses due to its fantastic DPS and is definitely a must-get for a build centered around dragon incantations.
You’ll need 23 Faith and 15 Arcane in order to use this spell. These numbers are both pretty low for how effective this incantation is, which is all the more reason why you should get your hands on it as soon as possible.
To find this spell, you will have to go to Caelid and fight the boss Decaying Ekzykes. He can be found near the Site of Grace which is called Caelid Highway South.
