Tales of Tribute is a deck building card game introduced to The Elder Scrolls Online with the High Isle Chapter. Play against other players or NPCs in taverns/inns across Tamriel. This game is a fun pass time and a great way to take a break from combat-focused game play. Playing Tales of Tribute gives you the chance to earn rare rewards too.
If you need some help with playing Tales of Tribute in ESO, you’re in the right place! In this guide I will share some helpful tips you can use when beginning your Tales of Tribute journey.
Tales of Tribute Board Layout
Here’s a diagram I created to help you familiarize yourself with the board. The Tutorials section of your menu has a tab called Tales of Tribute, where you will find more information on the different parts of the board, the resources, and more. This tool along with the diagram can help early on with understanding the game.
Tales of Tribute Rules: Before moving on, I wanted to revise the rules of the game. To win a match- you must accumulate 40 or more Prestige on your turn and hold the lead till your opponent’s turn is over. Additionally, you can win by acquiring the support of all four Patrons at one time. This leads to an immediate victory if you can achieve this.
Resources
To help with making the game easier to understand, learn the three types of “resources” you will need during each game.
Coin: You can use Coins to purchase cards from the Tavern or to activate a Patron’s abilities. You can lose Coin at the end of a turn if it isn’t spent.
Prestige: A resource that you build up as the game continues, whoever reaches 40 or more Prestige wins the game.
Power: Resource for certain cards that you can use to attack Agents or activate Patron abilities. Power will convert to Prestige if not used at the end of a turn.
Resource Management
Be careful with your resources during a match. Before purchasing cards, make sure they help your cause and choose them strategically. During your turn, determine whether you need more Coin to get better cards, need to refresh the Tavern or attain Power. Additionally, purchasing cards from the same deck can help you perform combos which is useful for gaining that edge against your opponent.
Keep in mind that some cards cannot be played when you purchase them and will go into your cooldown pile.
Card Types
Knowing the types of cards available to you is helpful when learning ToT. Below, I have a breakdown of each type and explain how they are used. These cards are important for building your deck and being able to play a strategy during a Tribute match.
Card Type | Description | Example Cards |
---|---|---|
Action | Action cards are placed into your cooldown pile when you purchase them. They will play the action associated with them. | Deck: Duke of Crows, Peck |
Agents | Agent cards remain on the board till defeated by your opponent or from card effects. Agents have play effect that can be activated by clicking them each turn. These cards also go into your cooldown pile after purchasing them. | Deck: The Druid King, The Chimera |
Contract Actions | Contract Actions are put into play as soon as they are acquired and at the end of your turn they go to the Tavern’s discard pile. They behave the same as Action cards. | Deck: Grandmaster Delmene Hlaalu, Kwama Egg Mine |
Contract Agents | Contract Agents behave similarly to the normal Agent cards however, they are played instantly and added to the board. When they are defeated they go into the Tavern discard pile. | Deck: Saint Pelin, Shield Bearer |
Tribute Decks/Patrons
Learn the basics of each Tribute deck like what play style they have and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Every deck is unique and it makes a big difference if you know what to expect when they are in play. Whether you are playing against other players or NPCs, make sure you have an idea of how each deck works.
- You can view Tales of Tribute Decks in your menu under “Collections” and see the different card types including what they do.
The Treasury Patron
The Treasury Patron is a neutral Patron that you can use during any match. Learning when to use it can be beneficial and help you attain better cards.
- How it works: The Treasury Patron (Deck) consists of 1 starter card and 8 standard cards that are available during every match. To activate the Patron’s ability you will have to pay 2 Coin and you can banish one card from your deck. In return, you will get 1 Power.
- Benefit: Using the Treasury Patron can help you make room for better cards in your deck and card management.
Card Combos
When you play multiple cards from the same deck, you can trigger a card combo. Try to purchase some cards from the same deck to trigger these during your match. Some cards have a suit that directly corresponds to one of the 4 Patrons, combos can take as few as two cards of the same suit or as many as 4 to activate. A lower suit variety can provide a higher likelihood of triggering combos.
The order in which you activate your card’s abilities also matters for combinations. Practicing these combos can make you a better player and can help you notice when the enemy is doing it so you can disrupt them.
Strategies
Learning new strategies helps you understand the game and makes you a better player. I recommend learning some of the starter deck strategies and putting them into practice. Once you are comfortable with the strategy of a deck you can pick up other ones a little easier. Check out this Strategy Guide created by some of the Elder Scrolls Online devs where they share some of their favorite strategies to use.
Upgrading Cards
Did you know you could upgrade your Tales of Tribute cards? Upgrading cards is a great way to get access to more powerful cards. Having upgrades makes the base ability of the card stronger which is helpful for matches. Some cards can be upgraded from playing matches of ToT and some upgrades come from clues that drop from Tales of Tribute Reward boxes.
Tales of Tribute Dailies
Spending time playing the game will help you familiarize yourself with the pace of the game, the different cards, and more. I recommend doing the Daily Tales of Tribute quests in Gonfalon Bay to improve your understanding of the game. If you are not ready to face other players you can choose to play against NPCs and complete the daily quest “Cards Across the Continent”. Please note: You will need the High Isle Chapter in order to access Tales of Tribute.
I hope you found this guide useful. Let us know what decks you like to use when playing Tales of Tribute!
