Deep Rock Galactic: Pickaxe Parts and Customization

I remember when pickaxe customization was first added to Deep Rock Galactic many updates ago. At first, I thought it was pointless and over-complicated. But as I continued to play the game, I started to appreciate that the customization was so in-depth.

If you haven’t touched any of the customization options for your pickaxe yet, chances are you’re confused about what to do. How do you unlock more pickaxe parts? Where do you go to add them? We’ll be covering that in this article for how to get pickaxe parts and customize your pickaxe in Deep Rock Galactic!

Understanding Your Pickaxe in Deep Rock Galactic

Without further delay, let’s hop right into the guide!

How to Get More Pickaxe Parts

Currently, at the time of writing this, there are three ways that you can obtain pickaxe parts. The first is by completing certain assignments. The second is by buying a DLC that gives you pickaxe parts. And lastly, by finding a Lost Pack during a mission.

Prestige Assignments can be picked up by going to the assignment terminal and selecting one once you’ve reached the right rank to unlock them. They are a special type of assignment that, once completed, will reward you with a pre-determined cosmetic item(s). Pickaxe Hunts are a type of Prestige Assignment and can be completed to unlock one set of pickaxe parts.

Next, we have the easiest (but also most expensive) way to get pickaxe parts: by buying DLC. Certain DLCs in the game can be bought that will reward the player with parts for their pickaxe, such as the Roughneck Pack. These can be bought through a digital store such as Steam. Prices will vary based on the DLC.

Lastly, when playing through a mission, you sometimes have a chance of encountering a Lost Pack. Sometimes dwarves will be left behind on their mining expeditions, and they will keep with them a helmet that you can find and scan. Once scanned, it will reveal the location of their backpack, which can be picked up to give you parts for your pickaxe and various other goodies. Just note that you’ll probably need your team’s Driller to access the backpack’s location in a timely manner.

How to Customize Your Pickaxe

Now onto the fun part… customizing your pickaxe! In order to do this, you’ll first need to go to the place designated for pickaxe customization. You can find this on your Space Rig. It is to the left of the weapon customization terminal. You’ll know it when you see it.

Once you are there, interact with the device and you’ll open up a UI that lets you tweak the look of your pickaxe. There are over half a dozen different parts you can change and swap out, giving you a lot of freedom in how you want to adjust the look of your tool. You can also change the color of your pickaxe, as well.

Keep in mind that you can only upgrade the look of your pickaxe here. For functional upgrades, you’ll need to go to the weapons customization terminal that is directly behind the pickaxe customization station.
