Clash Royale: How to Win Mega Draft and Best Cards

Learn the top Mega Draft strategies in this guide.

Draft battles might just be the most fun battles in Clash Royale. While most game modes require careful planning, high-level cards, and meta game knowledge, draft battles are more of a free-for-all. But there’s still a lot of strategy to them. In this article I’ll discuss how to win in the Mega Draft Challenge or any other kind of mega draft game mode. Let’s start by taking a look at how they work in general!

What is the Mega Draft Challenge?

The Mega Draft Challenge is one of the three challenge modes available right now in Clash Royale. There are also other Mega Draft game modes that appear from time to time, and this article is relevant for those as well. The Mega Draft mode forces players to pick from a set amount of cards, all of which are visible at the start of the draft. Each player picks cards in turns. The order is typically set where the first player gets to pick one card, then they alternate back and forth picking two at a time until the end. The final picks are one a time again. This balances the order so that the person who goes first doesn’t get a major advantage, since the second player gets to pick two first.

Once both players have drafted a complete deck of 8 cards, they battle just like normal. There isn’t anything different about the actual battle once it begins. This mode requires a good knowledge of deckbuilding and all the cards in the game, so it will reward experience and knowledge over just blind picking powerful cards at random.

Mega Draft Challenge also follows the standard challenge format of requiring 12 wins for max rewards and elimination after 3 losses. It costs 50 gems to enter.

What are the Best Cards in Mega Draft Battles?

To figure out what cards are the best, you have to think about what makes a good deck in general. Typically a strong Clash Royale deck has the following kinds of cards: offensive troop, tank, swarm clear, air defense, tank killer, spells, and sometimes a building. Sometimes you’ll have one card that fills multiple roles, and sometimes you won’t have all of these. But that’s the general guidelines for most modes.

In Mega Drafts, you’re limited to the cards chosen randomly by the game. But there will almost always be some combination of good cards to pick from. Here is a brief list of the cards that I would consider the best for draft battles:

  • Building-Targeting Offense (Royal Giant, Hog Rider, Ram Rider, etc.)
  • Dangerous Tanks (Mega Knight, P.E.K.K.A., Golem, etc.)
  • Swarm-Clearing Spells (The Log, Poison, Arrows, etc.)
  • Tank Support (Baby Dragon, Firecracker, Witches)
  • Any card that directly counters theirs!

How to Draft a Good Mega Draft Deck

When you start the Mega Draft, the most important thing to do first is identify the major threats available. Cards like Mega Knight, Royal Giant, Hog Rider, Balloon, and other dangerous cards which require counters will be picked first. You want to have at least one strong card to base the rest of your deck around, so you need to pick that first. Always start out with a card that you’re confident can carry you to victory, whether it be a pure offensive troop or a really strong tank which you can support with other ones.

The second thing to do is to identify strong counters, either for your own cards or theirs. For example, if a draft pool has both Inferno Dragon and Electro Wizard, you won’t want to be the one who picks the Dragon and then gets countered. Avoid easily countered cards unless you’re the last pick. There are also more general counters you’ll want to look for. Don’t take multiple swarm cards if multiple swarm counters are available. The Log, Firecracker, Mother Witch, and others are all dangerous against swarms.

After the First Few Picks

Once you have your main threat or tank, you’ll want to look for counters to what they’ve picked and/or support cards for your own. For example, if you took Royal Giant, look for cards like Firecracker or Baby Dragon to support it. High-value support cards that work with any deck are likely to get picked early, so don’t let your opponent scoop them all up. You don’t want to be left with easily-countered troops and too many spells as your last picks.

As you go through the draft, you pretty much keep looking for counters and support cards. Try and have at least one spell like Fireball, Poison, or The Log, but they’re not a requirement. Don’t forget about buildings either if your opponent picks something like Giant or Golem. But most importantly, make sure you have a decent average elixir. Don’t just pick big, powerful cards or you’ll end up losing. Just like with any deck, having a good balance of threats and support cards and a strong elixir curve are the keys to victory.

What Rewards Are Available From Mega Draft Challenge (2025)

The rewards for the Mega Draft Challenge this season are honestly kind of mediocre. The prize for winning 12 matches is a Book of Rare Cards. This item allows you to instantly upgrade any rare card by one level (you still have the pay the gold to level it up, but it gives you all the cards needed). This is a really good item (all the Books are), but is it worth grinding until you get 12 wins? Not really. Unless you’re really good at Mega Drafts, I don’t think it’s really worth the time or resources.

You can also get a bit of gold and some cards from this challenge. Each win you get grants more gold and better cards, up to a maximum of 11,000 gold and 550 cards. It’s not a bad amount, but it’s also not enough to really make me want to play over and over again until I win. Especially since there is a lot of luck involved in this challenge, so you can’t guarantee that you’ll win even if you’re the better player.
