Tower troops are still a relatively new concept in Clash Royale. In the past, you had the Tower Princess and nothing else. It wasn’t even something you’d consider. But as of the last year or so, we have access to a few new options. These troops are the ones that stand upon the two smaller towers in front of the King, and they’re a major part of your defense. I’ll look at all four currently available tower troops and rank them from worst to best!
4. Cannoneer
Overall Rating: 6/10
Cannoneer is the worst tower troop in Clash Royale, but he’s not completely horrible. His unique ability is that he fires much slower than the others, but his shots do far more damage. He’s strong against mid-HP troops like Valkyrie or Knight which he can quickly blow up. But against swarms, he’s in a horrible position. Using Cannoneer requires you to have an excess of swarm control, as without it you’ll almost certainly lose. Even something as simple as a Witch or Night Witch is major trouble for Cannoneer. Something like a Goblin Drill or Skeleton Balloon also poses a serious risk to him. Plus, he has the lowest base HP of all the tower troops. All of this combined just makes him a far too risky pick, but if you build a deck that is able to survive without needing tower support for swarms, he can still be really strong.
If Cannoneer had higher HP, I’d be a lot more willing to play him. I’d even play him if his damage was lower but he had just a slightly higher attack speed. But as he is, he just leaves you too vulnerable. He gets destroyed by Goblin Barrel, too, which is too risky by itself in my opinion.
3. Dagger Duchess
Overall Rating: 7/10
Dagger Duchess has seen her fair share of nerfs since she was introduced, and I’d say she’s in a pretty decent spot right now. Her ability is that she fires multiple shots very quickly, but she only gets 8 shots before having to recharge. This makes her strong against mid- to high-HP troops like Giants and Hog Rider, but leaves her vulnerable once she runs out. If an opponent is able to force your Duchess to use up her daggers (which happens pretty frequently), she becomes very weak. She also has lower HP than Tower Princess or Royal Chef, so she’s easier to beat if the game goes into overtime. Decks like Log Bait or X-Bow have an easy time dealing with the Duchess, so you have to properly prepare to deal with them in other ways.
That all being said, she is a really strong pick anyway. Just like all of the alternative tower troops, there are weaknesses but they’re not impossible to have a game plan for. Just make sure you don’t get caught with no daggers when you’re low on elixir, or you’ll end up losing and wishing you had just stuck with the Princess.
2. Royal Chef
Overall Rating: 8/10
Royal Chef is a really interesting tower troop, and his strength depends a lot on your opponent. His ability allows him to “feed” one of your troops every 21-35 seconds, which increases their level by 1. If you can get him to target a tank or win con like Hog Rider or Balloon, then you’ll almost certainly see some benefits from it. He also won’t target troops that are already close to death, so it’s rare that his level up gets wasted. This benefit is even stronger if you’re already over-leveled, as if you can get a level 16 threat it’s extremely hard for opponents who are using lower level cards to deal with them. If you’re under-leveled, he can also help you get back into a range where you can actually defend better.
Royal Chef’s downside is that he does have slightly less HP than Tower Princess, and he attacks 0.2 seconds more slowly. So he’s still worse in terms of defense than the Princess, but with the level-up factored in this isn’t as serious. Plus, he throws pancakes. That’s just fun no matter what.
That all being said, though, there is a special kind of anger that I feel when my Royal Chef chooses to level up a random skeleton or spirit troop. I really wish he’d just not upgrade troops with such low HP or ones that aren’t meant to survive anyway, but it is what it is.
1. Tower Princess
Overall Rating: 9/10
In my opinion, it’s hard to beat the original. Tower Princess is the basic tower troop in Clash Royale, and I think she’s still the best. Since you have no way to predict what kind of deck your opponent is going to be using, consistency is more important than occasionally having a “perfect” deck. Tower Princess is about as consistent as you can ever hope for in Clash. She has the highest HP, the best defensive ability across the board, and never feels weak. Sure, she does struggle with fighting tanks. But that’s not a big deal as long as you have something to deal with them, as you always should.
Tower Princess’s consistent ability to deal with almost anything makes her the best tower troop in Clash Royale. There’s never a time when I’m upset to be using her. Even if some tower troops are better against specific decks, she’s still always decent against everything. Royal Chef is the only one I’d consider using instead of her in ladder matches, but I still think she’s just a bit better. Consistency is key, and Tower Princess is the queen of consistency.
I will say that sometimes when I play Tower Princess I wish that I had gone with Royal Chef or even Duchess, but the consistency is just too strong. She’s always good, no matter what. But sometimes those pancakes are hard to resist.
