Clash Royale: News & Events

Everything that's happening in the world of Clash Royale right now.

Clash Royale is one of several mobile games by Supercell, and it’s arguably the most competitive. I’ve been playing since 2016 and still ladder from time-to-time these days. Below, I’ll be covering what’s currently going on in the world of Clash Royale.

For newcomers to Clash Royale or players looking for a guided experience, I’d suggest visiting my getting started guide here.

This Month in Clash Royale (June 2024)

The June Clash Royale season looks to be very exciting thanks to the new Goblin Barrel evolution. Goblin Barrel was already one of the most powerful win-cons in Clash Royale, but now it’s even better. Will the evolved Goblin Barrel establish its dominance in the meta, or will it get powered out by the wealth of counters available? Well, the only way to find out is to try it for yourself. Thankfully, we’ll have the chance to do that this season thanks to various events and challenges featuring the new evolution.

June Season Events & Challenges

  • Goblin Barrel Evo – June 3-10 (Challenge: June 7-10)
    • This game mode allows you to try out the new evolution for Goblin Barrel in the form of either 1v1 or 2v2 draft battles.
  • Goblin Power! – June 10-17 (Challenge: June 14-17)
    • An event which promises to awaken “special powers in all goblins”… whatever that might mean.
  • Classic Decks – June 17-24 (Challenge: June 21-24)
    • Battles featuring “classic decks”, but notably excluding Hog Rider and Mega Knight. This should make for a more varied set of decks than some previous versions of this event since those two cards are usually heavily featured.
  • Goblin Party Hut – June 24 – July 1 (Challenge: June 28 – July 3)
    • A party game mode featuring, presumably, lots of Goblins.

This month actually sees a really fun rotation of events. Goblin Barrel Evo is obviously the most exciting since it allows us more chances to check out the new Goblin Barrel evolution, but there’s more from there. We don’t know much about the Goblin Power! event, but it’ll probably just be some form of standard game mode with added goblins or arena affects. Classic Decks is kind of randomly thrown into the middle of all the Goblin events, but it’s still a good one. Plus, since Hog Rider and Mega Knight are banned, the decks will be a lot more interesting. It’ll be fun to see if the “nerf Hog Rider / Mega Knight” crowd are right, or if the game is better with them in it. Then we also have Goblin Party Hut, and while I don’t know what that is at all, there will almost certainly be Goblins (and probably Goblin Huts).

New Evolution – Goblin Barrel

The newest evolution added to Clash Royale is none other than the Goblin Barrel. This card has already been a strong win-con for years, but it’s even stronger now. With the evolution, whenever you throw Goblin Barrel, a “dummy/decoy” barrel is thrown to the other side of the arena (usually at a tower). Enemies will not be able to tell which Barrel is the real one until they’ve already landed, so it eliminates the standard “Log or Zap immediately” strategy which usually counters Goblin Barrel.

Evolved Goblin Barrel adds versatility to a win-con that was already dangerously strong. From my own experience so far, it definitely feels about as powerful as you’d think. Just take the already-powerful Barrel and just add another one (with slightly less damage) and the pressure adds up like crazy. You can put this in more aggressive decks like Hog Cycle variants or general Barrel + Miner decks and similar ones. This is absolutely an evolution worth grabbing, so get it while you can.

How to Get the Goblin Barrel Evolution?

As with most things in Clash Royale, if you want it, you have to pay for it. If you’re willing to pay for the Diamond Pass, you’ll be able to get the Goblin Barrel evolution quickly this season. However, if you’re not willing to pay, you’ll be able to get it… later. Yeah, there’s no actual way to earn the most recently added evolution without paying, even if you’re willing to play a ton. The only exception to this is if you already have a bunch of Evolution Shards you can use on them, or if you’re somehow able to level up enough times to earn them all (which takes a very long time from scratch). Regardless of how I feel about that, on the bright side, you will at least have chances to earn them for free (or also real money) next season via the shop and other methods once they’re no longer the newest.

Most Recent Balance Update – May 2024

**No July updates. Next should be in August**

Nerfs

Let’s kick things off with the nerfs this time, since there are far more of them than anything else. It seems like no massive changes are really being made here, as most changes involve health, fairly small-to-moderate damage adjustments, and a few specific issues.

  • Evolved Bats – Greatly increased first hit speed (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Battle Ram – Reduced knockback to heavy troops (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Bomber – Increased cycle rate (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Knight – Slightly reduced health (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Mortar – Slightly reduced hit points (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Royal Giant and Royal Recruits – Reduced health (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Skeletons – Increased first hit speed (Nerfed)
  • Evolved Zap – Reduced damage for second and third Zaps (Nerfed)
  • Cannoneer – Slightly reduced damage (Nerfed)
  • Dagger Duchess – Reduced hit points (Nerfed)
  • Goblin Drill – First Goblin spawn time increased (Nerfed)
  • Poison – Crown Tower damage reduced (Nerfed)

Buffs

Now, on the contrary to all the nerfs, we only have two buffs to mention this time. While their evolved counterparts might have gotten a nerf, the non-evolved versions actually get the only buffs of the update.

  • Normal Royal Giant and Royal Recruits – Slightly increased health (Buffed)

Reworks

Then there are the “adjusted” ones, which have all been changed in a way designed more to rework them rather than buff or nerf them. While certain aspects of these cards might have been buffed or nerfed, it’d be wrong to call them either one entirely. For these, we’ll really just have to test them out and see what will come from them.

  • Evolved Archers – Reduced health and more damage (Adjusted)
  • Evolved Barbarians – Slightly reduced health and increased Boost Duration (Adjusted)
  • Evolved Firecracker – Reduced health and more damage (Adjusted)
  • Evolved Firecracker – Reduced health and more damage (Adjusted)
  • Evolved Tesla – Reduced hit points and now guarantees at least two Electro Pulses (Adjusted)
  • Evolved Valkyrie – Reduced health and increased Tornado damage (Adjusted)
  • Evolved Wall Breakers – Damage reduced but run speed increased (Adjusted)
  • Elixir Collector – Elixir generation time increased but lifetime increased (Adjusted)
