Ochette and her Hunter job allows players in Octopath Traveler 2 to capture monsters that you’ll face in the wild and utilize their skills for your own party during battle. This is an excellent ability to have and opens up the door for a wide variety of strategies and team compositions since each monster offers its own unique skills when captured.
However, there is only a finite number of monsters the player can have captured at a time. That’s why today we’re looking at the best monsters to capture in Octopath Traveler 2, where to find them, and how they can help aid your party in battle.
Octopath Traveler 2 Best Monsters to Capture
Let’s get right into our guide to the best monsters to capture in Octopath Traveler 2 so you can expand your party with extra creatures! While each monster on this list is amazing, we’ll work our way down to the best one.
7. Vagrant Ratking II
The Vagrant Ratking II is a solid monster to capture as soon as possible in Octopath Traveler 2. It has the Double Cleave (All) skill and has a 7/10 power rating.
Where to Find It
This monster can be found in the Forsaken Graveyard located to the south of Montwise. This level 40 area can be accessed by taking the ladder in Montwise just south of the Inn. While this area may be a bit higher level than your party when you first visit Montwise, it’s very worth bringing Ochette here for the chance to capture a Vagrant Ratking II.
How to Use the Vagrant Ratking II
The primary reason to capture a Vagrant Ratking II is to take advantage of its useful Double Cleave (All) skill. This skill deals Axe damage to all enemies, making it great for clearing out groups of foes who share a weakness to Axes.
Skills that deal Axe damage to all enemies are somewhat hard to come by aside from the Apothecary’s Sweeping Cleave, so it’s worthwhile to have this monster on hand.
6. Ocean Lizardking III
This monster won’t be accessible until players have the ship The Grand Terry. However, it is worth the wait since its Repeated Phantom Slash skill is very helpful.
Where to Find It
Once players have access to The Grand Terry, they will be able to access Roque Island. While this is the location of Partitio’s Chapter 4, stopping here early is a good option so players can capture an Ocean Lizardking III. The monsters here may be difficult, but braving the danger can be worthwhile to snag a very helpful monster to summon.
How to Use the Ocean Lizardking III
The Oceaon Lizardking III’s skill, Repeated Phantom Slash, offers players double the benefits when using it. This skill not only deals Dagger damage twice to a single enemy, it also provides a buff to all allies that increases their Speed and Evasion.
This makes the Ocean Lizard King III a great monster to pair when using a Thief in your party, since they can benefit from the Speed and Evasion boost, as well as the addition of another Dagger user.
5. Dread Wolf
This optional boss can be tough to beat, but once you do, it becomes a fantastic monster to capture. When summoned, it uses True Mortal Fang which deals 4x Dagger damage to all enemies, as well as decreases their Physical Defense and Speed for 3 turns.
Where to Find It
The Dread Wolf is an optional boss that can be found at the optional dungeon Infernal Castle, located outside of Stormhail. You will need 7 characters to access the dungeon, so it requires a party including Temenos, Agnea, Ochette, and/or Partitio along with three NPCs they can recruit.
Fighting the Dread Wolf can be difficult, but you will need to defeat it before it becomes capturable. After defeating it once, it becomes a random spawn within the dungeon, albeit with a low chance to spawn.
How to Use the Dread Wolf
It might seem like a lot of work to capture the Dread Wolf, but its True Mortal Fang skill is invaluable. This skill comes with a whole host of benefits including dealing 4x Dagger damage, as well as inflicting Speed and Physical Defense debuffs on enemies.
This skill can be a double threat, as it can quickly deal with enemies who are weak to Dagger attacks while slowing down the remaining foes for the rest of your party to mop up.
4. Light Revenant
The Light Revenant can be an elusive creature, but capturing one allows players to deal a staggering amount of Light damage. It has the skill Solar Ray Clock, which deals 9999 Light damage to all enemies while also buffing the party’s Physical and Elemental Defenses.
Where to Find It
The Light Revenant can theoretically be captured quite early in the game, but it can be quite risky. It is found in the Cavern of Waves on Toto’haha, a level 48 dungeon. However, once you have Ochette and Partitio, you can head just north of Toto’haha Harbor: Anchorage to access the cave.
Once you encounter the Light Revenant, use Partitio’s Hired Help skill to hire a Guard who can deal enough damage to get the Light Revenant to a 100% capture chance.
How to Use the Light Revenant
Although the Light Revenant can allow players to squash foes in the early game, it can still be a force to be reckoned with throughout the entire game. Aside from Clerics, there aren’t many characters who can hit all enemies with a Light skill, especially one as powerful as Solar Ray Clock.
The added bonus of an increase to both Physical and Elemental Defenses makes the Light Revenant an almost universally useful summon.
3. Scourge of the Sea
This monster is another optional boss that can be re-encountered and captured later on. It has the skill Left Straight which deals Staff damage to one enemy and removes 6 of its shield points regardless of its weaknesses.
Where to Find It
To capture the Scourge of the Sea, you will first need to battle it as a boss. This enemy is located on the water represented by a whirlpool between Toto’haha and the Brightlands.
After defeating it the first time, it has a 3% chance of reappearing in that same area as a random encounter. You can increase the chance of finding this monster by having the Hunter’s More Rare Monsters Support Skill equipped.
How to Use the Scourge of the Sea
The main reason to use this monster is for its ability to shred an enemy’s shield points without having to worry about hitting the correct weakness. Many bosses will shift their weaknesses throughout the battle, so having an ability that can avoid weaknesses all together is invaluable.
On top of that, it reduces shield points by a total of 6, which is a significant amount even for boss enemies.
2. Battle-Worn Shark
The Battle-Worn Shark can be tough to capture, but it has one of the best support abilities in the game. Its Complete Nourishment (All) skill heals all allies’ HP, SP, and BP.
Where to Find It
Like the Scourge of the Sea, the Battle-Worn Shark is an optional boss that must be defeated before it can be captured. You will find it in The Sundering Sea just to the south of Canalbrine.
After defeating it once, it has a chance to spawn again in that same area with the potential for the player to capture it this time.
How to Use the Battle-Worn Shark
Having the Battle-Worn Shark in your arsenal of summons can come in quite handy during some of the game’s toughest fights. Its Complete Nourishment (All) skill can often get your party out of tight situations.
Use this skill in situations where you need to heal but also want to conserve your party’s other resources.
1. Chubby Cait
The Chubby Cait can be a real wildcard, but has the potential to be the best monster to capture in Octopath Traveler 2. Its skill, Supreme Luck of the Cait, can activate one of several effects that can be game-changing for your party.
Where to Find It
The major downside of the Chubby Cait is how rare they are to encounter. They have a chance of spawning anywhere in Solista, but their spawn rates are very low. You can use the Hunter job’s More Rare Monsters Support Skill to help, but even if you find one, they run away frequently.
Using the Scourge of the Sea’s Left Straight skill might help, since it can reduce the Chubby Cait’s shield points, making it less likely to flee.
How to Use the Chubby Cait
It’s hard to use this monster consistently since the effects of Luck of the Cait are random. However, each one is extremely beneficial in their own way.
- Opulent Restorative nullifies all enfeebling effects on the party while nullifying all buffs on the enemies.
- Lap of Luxury nullifies all damage to your party.
- Opulent Trio nullifies all Elemental attacks, reflects spells, and counter attacks Physical attacks on top of granting the auto-revive buff.
- Finally, Opulent Olive restores all allies’ HP.
