In Clash of Clans, gems can be used to purchase a variety of boosts, bonuses, and items. However, they can quickly run out, and once they do, they can be expensive and time consuming to get back. In this article we’ll look at the best and the worst ways to spend gems in Clash of Clans.
You’ll want to make the best use of your gems to improve your home village’s efficiency, as well as avoid wasting them and being forced to fall back on micro-transactions for more. So then, let’s go over how to use your gems to make your village quicker, stronger, and more abundant with resources!
The Importance of Spending Gems Wisely
One thing guaranteed in Clash of Clans is that you’ll constantly be dealing with time-consuming tasks. Some upgrades and constructions can easily take more than a week to complete!
If you want to avoid spending your real-life money on micro-transactions to make the game go quicker, then knowing how to spend your gems properly early on can relieve some of the waiting you’ll have to in Clash of Clans. By knowing what to spend your gems on early in the game, you can ensure that your village quickly becomes as efficient as possible.
Spend Gems on the Home Village or Builder Base?
In Clash of Clans, you’re given two villages – your Home Village and your Builder Base. When looking at how to spend your gems, whether you’re just starting out or a veteran looking to optimize their village, you’re going to want to focus on your Home Village.
Being able to maximize efficiency within the Home Village first will allow for better resource raids and clan involvement. Only after accomplishing the best gem investments that we’ll go over in a moment, should you then invest available gems into the Builder Base.
Best Ways to Spend Gems in Clash of Clans
We’ll go over the best ways to spend your gems first.
Builder’s Huts
Builder’s Huts will be the most important thing to spend gems on until you’ve obtained all of them. Simply put, in a game where efficiency is key, having all workers on hand to build and upgrade simultaneously will significantly increase how quickly things get done.
To put the time consumption issue into perspective, it will take two days to upgrade the Gold Storage from level 11 to level 12. If you had four Gold Storages that you wanted to upgrade (all from level 11 to 12) with only one builder available, it would take 8 days.
However, if all your gems went to acquiring Builder’s Huts and there were four available builders, the same set of upgrades would only take 2 days. Plus, they would all be upgraded simultaneously!
Ultimately, constructing all the Builder’s Huts will cost a good chunk of gems. The easiest way to lay out the cost is to just show you the numbers:
- The first hut will be free.
- The second (which is built during the tutorial) will cost 250 gems.
- The third will cost 500 gems.
- The fourth 1000 gems.
- The fifth 2000 gems.
- A total of 3,750 gems is needed to obtain all 5 builder’s huts.
The 6th Builder Hut
To look over at the Builder Base for a moment, it’s important to note that a sixth builder can be obtained, but it’s through a separate process.
After spending gems to build the 5 Builder’s Huts on your Home Village, you can progress your Builder Hall to level 9 to unlock B.O.B. Control. After fully upgrading B.O.B. Control, you’ll unlock the O.T.T.O. Hut which allows for a sixth builder to be sent to your home village.
Getting the sixth builder should be done after the first five are built. Trying to do this quickly before getting all Builder’s Huts could lead to a loss of gems if you try to quick finish upgrades and constructions on your Builder Base.
The Trader
After obtaining all the Builder’s Huts and reaching level 8, you’ll be able to spend gems at the Trader. He will offer weekly deals and allow you to spend gems on various items that apply bonuses to your village.
You can obtain runes, books, resources, and even cosmetic items ranging in price from 25 to 3,000 gems through the Trader’s weekly deals. With these items, you’ll be able to grant bonuses to your village, builders, and resource production.
Some notable items that you can obtain include:
- The Book of Heroes – can be used to upgrade any Hero once immediately in either your home or battle village.
- The Builder Potion – boosts all builders in your home village, increasing their speed ten times.
- The Rune of Gold – using it will automatically fill all gold storages in your home village.
Depending on what your goals are in terms of your Home Village or Builder Base, using one of these items can drastically boost your efficiency – whether you’re trying to bolster your army to increase your raid success, quickly finish building and upgrading your defenses, or just want to immediately fill your resources stores to increase your village’s wealth.
Worst Ways to Spend Gems in Clash of Clans
When it comes to playing Clash of Clans in a free-to-play way, you want to avoid using your gems on things that won’t necessarily benefit your Home Village or Builder Base. The reason being that once you run out of gems, the only way to quickly replenish them is to spend real-life money.
A majority of mobile games (like Clash of Clans) have various micro-transactions that can speed up your progression. Those offers can be incredibly tempting, however, it’s important to know that these same goals can be achieved without spending money. Knowing what not to spend your gems on will help you keep them around for when you really need them to make your village stronger.
Cosmetics
When it comes to the immediate return on gem purchases, cosmetics hold very little value. Considering the Mighty Statue, Pirate Flag, and the Mighty Hero Statue all cost 500 gems, you can easily end up depleting your gems faster than you earn them.
If your goal is to use gems to make your Home Village and Builder Base as strong as possible, then cosmetic items will only end up being a complete waste of gems. Although, if you’re in a spot where no one could come close to successfully raiding your base, it couldn’t hurt to spruce your village up a bit if you wanted.
Quick Finishes
Although this may be one of the more tempting ways to spend gems early on in Clash of Clans, it will end up being a waste of gems in the long run.
Like we mentioned above, these options to save time can lead players to spending gems quicker than they earn them, eventually putting them in a tricky place. Instead, if you focus on obtaining Builder’s Huts, you’ll find that your building timers will go by fairly quickly.
Shields
Although it may seem like spending gems on shields is a good way to protect your home village, they ultimately end up being a waste for the most part.
The better investment in terms of protecting your base is to spend your gems on all the Builder’s Huts and using them to build/upgrade various defensive buildings simultaneously. This will end up providing more robust protection against raids.
Since shields don’t last forever, repeatedly buying any of the following shields, the two-hour (10 gems), the one-day (100 gems), the two-day (150 gems), and the one-week (250 gems), would end up taking a lot of valuable gems from you.
