Layout 1

- Style: Defense
When looking at the first few defense style layouts, it’s important to note that these are most useful to focus your buildings on defending your base on a day-to-day layout. These might not always be as valuable as war-styled layouts in situations like clan wars for reasons we’ll soon touch on.
Two key aspects of the first layout indicate its defensive style. The main resource stores are all protected behind a layer of walls and there is strict symmetry among the entire base.
Having a perfectly mirrored base keeps enemy troops the same distance away from your Town Hall regardless of where your opponent deploys them. Keeping the resources stored behind walls is key for a defensive layout, but, as mentioned earlier, is one of the reasons it would fail as a layout dedicated solely to fighting wars.
By keeping resource stores behind walls, you forfeit stronger protections for your defensive structures, like Wizard Towers and Cannons, in order to make sure you can attempt to defend some of your resource stores.
As we continue with defensive-style bases, we’ll look at this further.
Layout 2

- Style: Defense
This layout follows the same two key principles that the first layout follows but puts one aspect to better use than the previous base.
Like the first layout, this base has all major resource stores protected behind walls. Another characteristic similar to the previous defensive layout is the symmetry in its structure.
Although, this layout uses symmetry to its advantage even more. The square shape, unlike the diamond-like structure of the first base, ensures that regardless of where troops deploy, they will all start at the same distance from the Town Hall.
The previous layout leaves some room for your opponent to exploit your thinner flanks, however, the square shape allows for space on all sides of your Town Hall, and in Clash of Clans, more space for your Town Hall means more time for your defenses to rebuke your opponent’s advances.
Layout 3
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: Defense
Although this layout differs somewhat in its design, it follows the same basic principles of a defense-styled layout.
The symmetry of the base and keeping resource stores protected behind walls all lend to protect the base from a three-star loss when invaded. An extra benefit that comes from the style of this layout is the focus on the base being comprised of sections of smaller compartments instead of spaces with open space.
Having your base broken up into smaller compartments creates extra barriers and obstacles your opponent’s ground troops would have to get past. The more obstacles in your opponent’s troop’s way, the more time your defenses have.
Layout 4
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: Defense
Unlike the previous defense layouts, this base strays off the path and leaves a couple of resources stored outside of the walls.
This doesn’t put the layout in a position of vulnerability as when it comes to defensive-styled layouts, the goal is quite straightforward. That goal is to protect your town hall and prevent your opponent from destroying your Town Hall while preserving some of your resources.
The symmetry, small compartments within the base, and concentrations of defenses on all sides of the Town Hall will help this base thwart any enemy attack.
Layout 5

- Style: Farming
Moving away from the norms a defensive-styled layout, we’re now looking at farming-styled bases. The most important part of a farming layout is defending your resource stores. These are useful at times when your focus in the game is preserving your resources and not moving up the competitive ranks.
In this first layout, all of the resource stores are behind the walls. Even at the expense of semi-vulnerable defenses at the top and bottom of the base.
The most important resource store of focus in a farming layout is the Dark Elixir storage. This structure can be seen at the core of the base, packed in between the Clan Castle and Town Hall.
Layout 6

- Style: Farming
One unique aspect of this layout is the long shape it has. Although there is a heavy concentration of both valuable resource stores and powerful defenses in the core of the base, there are still some resource storage structures placed throughout the base.
Having some space between the resource stores causes your opponent’s troops to have to waste more time getting to them while fighting back against your defenses. This also works to protect your resources, just like keeping them behind walls, as the more time your opponent has to waste, the lower the odds they’ll earn all three stars.
Layout 7
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: Farming
This layout is a very textbook example of a farming-styled base. The square shape means that the most protected buildings will be at the very core of the base, in this case, those structures are all of the resource storage structures.
The layered sections and the heavily fortified core of the base put this layout in a position to consistently fend off attacks at lower competitive levels while being able to defend your hard-earned resources.
Layout 8
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: Farming
This farming layout takes a different approach to defending resources than the previous farming-styled layouts. Instead of having most resources heavily concentrated with concentrations of defenses around them, this layout moves towards smaller groupings of them.
The layout strays from symmetry to create smaller groupings of a few resources and a few defenses. There are even a few resource stores is more vulnerable positions.
The emphasis of this layout is to create as much space between resources as possible to try and prevent your opponent from being able to eliminate all of them within their time limit.
Layout 9
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: Farming
In a similar fashion to the previous layout, creating various groups of one or two resource stores along with a couple of defensive structures. Like with the previous approach, the various sections force your opponent to waste time by breaking through one section after another.
The small compartments of defenses and resource stores along with the square-shaped layout allow for the base to not only provide great protection for the resources but also for the crucial Town Hall and the core of the layout.
Layout 10
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: Farming
For our last farming layout, we see a similar blocky shape to aid in defense but was also see the idea of having smaller compartments used slightly differently.
Instead of having one or two resource storage structures dotted around accompanied by a few defenses, most of the resources are divided into three large blocks one three out of the four sides to the layout.
This forces your opponent to either focus their attack on one side, preserving the resources you have on the opposite side of your base or expend their troops on several sides of the layout, making it harder for any significant damage to be done.
Layout 11
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: War
When it comes to war-styled layouts, there is only one focus. Make sure your opponent does not achieve three stars against you.
These layouts are most useful in situations of competitive wars, like clan wars, where scores are solely decided on how many stars are earned during attacks. A three-star victory cannot be achieved if the Town Hall remains standing, therefore a lot of base structure and defense placement are based on protecting the Town Hall.
In the first layout, we see just that, the square shape serves to fortify the core of the base all the while a layer of defenses is dedicated solely to protecting the Town Hall. Although resource stores are put in vulnerable positions, it’s for the purpose of creating as many obstacles as possible to keep enemy troops away from the Town Hall.
Layout 12
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: War
Unlike the last war base design, this layout puts more focus on protecting resource stores while also keeping defenses up and the Town Hall secured.
As we’ve seen previously, the square shape of the base provides significant protection to the core of the base, where we have the Town Hall, Clan Castle, and the Dark Elixir Storage.
Breaking up blocks of resource stores and defenses and putting a section on each side of the base forces your opponent to attack one side with full force or to divide their troops, weakening their attack if their attack strategy isn’t strong.
Layout 13
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: War
Our current layout takes the war-style idea of fortifying your Town Hall to the extreme. Not only is the layout snug in the core of the base but there is also a dense field of defenses immediately surrounding the Town Hall.
The square shape and the compartment-style sections all aid in ensuring it takes enemy troops as long as possible to reach the core of the base.
If you have low-level defenses like Wizard Towers and Mortars, having a ring of traps and defenses around the Town Hall will give you an extra boost in preserving your three stars.
Layout 14
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: War
A layout that has little regard for resources but places significant focus on defense for the sole purpose of retaining stars to help your Clan achieve victories during competition.
The long sections of walls serve as barriers for attacking ground troops, the compartment style ensuring there are at least two layers of walls to reach the Town Hall from all angles. If your main goal is to preserve stars in competition, this layout could serve you well.
Layout 15
- Base Layout Link: here
- Style: War
Similar to the previous layout, there is little focus on resource preservation. Another aspect reminiscent of the war style is how the entire base is built around the Town Hall. Compartments were shaped and organized in a manner to preserve 3 stars.
A properly organized war-style layout with properly placed defenses will ensure you don’t lose all 3 stars to your opponent and will help push your clan to victory during the heat of war.
Good Luck, Chief
Although the layouts that follow the three main styles; farming, defensive, and war bases, all follow the same basic principles, knowing the variations within the best layouts for Town Hall level 10 in Clash of Clans will allow you to learn how to play to your strengths and dominate the opponent.
