TOTK: The 10 Best Elixirs with Recipes

Sidestep the grinding and use these powerful elixirs to overcome obstacles.

Food isn’t the only vital necessity you will need to survive in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Elixirs are also crucial to have on hand when you are faced with the many tough objectives and challenging hurdles that the game has to offer. Not only are they easy to make, but they give you immediate access to areas of the game that would otherwise require armor sets, or relentless grinding to enter. Here are the elixirs that you will need to have in stock if you want to get past these obstacles as quickly as possible.

10. Fireproof Elixir

Recipe: Fireproof Lizard or a Smotherwing Butterfly + Monster Part

This is a must-have elixir if you want to delve into the depths of Death Mountain for your first dungeon, or if you simply just want to explore Death Mountain. Although there is the Flamebreaker armor that you can purchase at the armor shop in Goron City, the entire set will cost you a whopping 3,300 rupees. With Fireproof elixir, you can make all the progress you want in Death Mountain and skip the endless grind for rupees. Fireproof elixir will also better protect you against fiery areas in Death Mountain’s Depths, and against enemies that utilize fire attacks like Fire Likes and Fire Wizzrobes. If you want any elixir to last longer, then add more than one main ingredient or monster part to the cooking pot.

You will find fireproof lizards along the path of the Goronbi River, and inside most of the caves in the Eldin Region. But, if you are impatient like me and want them fast, then head on over to Beedle at the Woodland Stable, or the South Akkala Stable. You can also get them from Nembis, a traveling merchant who travels between Wetland Stable and Kakariko Village. They will cost you 25 rupees each, so make sure you have a decent amount of money on you beforehand.

9. Electro Elixir

Recipe: Electric Darner or Thunderwing Butterfly + Monster Part

If you have experienced the spontaneous weather changes in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, then you already know how annoying a thunderstorm can be. You will be forced to remove all of your armor and weapons that conduct electricity. If you don’t do it quickly you will get struck by lighting, and lose a chunk of health for it. You also won’t last long against enemies that use electric attacks or arrows. Thankfully, the Electro Elixir offers a solution to these pesky problems. An Electro Elixir will allow you to take less damage from lightning, and electric attacks. If you don’t want to slog through the long quest to get all three pieces of the Rubber Armor, then the Electro Elixir is a solid temporary fix to your electrocution problem.

Electric Darners and Thunderwing Butterflies only appear during thunderstorms, which can make them hard to find. But don’t worry, Beedle sells Thunderwing Butterflies for 10 rupees at Tabantha Bridge Stable, Lakeside Stable, Foothill Stable, and Riverside Stable. You can find Electric Darners from Beedle at the Riverside Stable. If you would like to farm them, then you’ll most likely find them in the Faron Grasslands, Thunderhead Isles, Hyrule Ridge, or Gerudo Desert during a thunderstorm.

8. Spicy Elixir

Recipe: Warm Darner or Summerwing Butterfly + Monster Part

If you would like to travel to the Hebra Region where the Wind Temple is located, or the Gerudo Highlands, then the Spicy Elixir will come in mighty handy. You will find out very quickly that if you don’t have the armor you need to withstand the cold, you will take hits to your health over time. You can save up your rupees and purchase the Snowquill set at the Rito Store for 2150 rupees, or you can bypass that with the Spicy elixir. This elixir grants you easy access to a huge chunk of the map, which is why it is so valuable. Just make sure you have enough vials of the elixir on you when you are exploring these vast regions.

You can buy Summerwing Butterflies from Beedle for 10 rupees each at the Tabantha Bridge Stable, Kara Kara Bazaar, or the Snowfield Stable. Warm Darners can be purchased at the New Serenne Stable, Snowfield Stable, or Rito Stable for 10 rupees. Warm Darners can be found flying around in the Akkala Highlands, or Hyrule Field. Summerwing Butterflies can be found in Eldin Canyon.

7. Chilly Elixir

Recipe: Cold Darner or Winterwing Butterfly + Monster Part

If you have played the game long enough, then I am sure you have stumbled into the hotter regions and quickly realized that you can’t survive in them for long without some relief from the blistering heat. The Desert Voe Armor Set, which gives you full heat resistance, requires 2,450 rupees and a solid grind to find. So if you don’t have the rupees and you want to explore the more arid regions in the game with no hassle, then this elixir is crucial. This elixir, like the Spicy Elixir, lets you explore a large area on the map without any trouble. However, make sure you have enough of it on hand when exploring the hotter regions.

You can travel to certain areas and hunt for the resources you need for this elixir, or you can find them in Beedle’s shop. You can buy a cold darner for 10 rupees from Beedle at the Kara Kara Bazaar, or the Woodland Stable. Winterwing butterflies can also be bought from Beedle for 10 rupees at the Tabantha Bridge Stable. If you’d like to look for these bugs on the map, travel to the Tabantha region, Hyrule Ridge, or the Thundra Plateau.

6. Sticky Elixir

Recipe: Sticky Frog or Sticky Lizard + Monster Part

Climbing is unavoidable in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and quite often you will be forced to climb in heavy rain. This makes any climbable surface an absolute nightmare to scale if you don’t have the right armor. The Froggy Armor is what you need, but in order to get it, you will need to complete the Potential Princess Sightings quest which is quite lengthy and tiresome. So if you want a simpler solution, the Sticky Elixir is perfect for climbing up wet or icy cliffs. Its a lifesaver when you find yourself stuck at the bottom of a slippery mountainside in the rain, which happens more often than not with the frequent weather changes.

Sticky frogs and sticky lizards aren’t very hard to find. You can find many sticky lizards at the bottom of wells, or in caverns. Beedle also sells them for 32 rupees at the South Akkala Stable. You can find sticky frogs in Kakariko Village, or you can buy them from Beedle for 40 rupees at Lakeside Stable or Highland Stable.

5. Hasty Elixir

Recipe: Hot-Footed Frog or Hightail Lizard + Monster Part

There are many instances in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom where you will need to act fast in tricky situations. If you find yourself going up against a tough enemy, you will need to quickly dodge its attacks and get up close to land your attacks. Or, you may even find yourself running away from a whole hoard of enemies or one large enemy that you aren’t ready to fight yet. You may even be trying to get to a location quickly so you can get in range of a dragon or pick up a star fragment before they disappear. For all of these occasions, the Hasty Elixir is extremely useful. You will especially find it useful in battle because it helps you knock out your enemies quickly. It can also cut your swimming, climbing, and running time in half.

Hot-footed frogs can be bought for 10 rupees from Beedle at the Outskirt Stable, the Dueling Peaks Stable, and the Wetland Stable. You can also find them in cave streams and rivers in East Necluda, and the Lanayru Great Spring. Hightail lizards can be bought for 10 rupees from Beedle at the Lakeside Stable, or the Akkala Stable. If you’d like to look for them instead, head to Hyrule Field or Hyrule Ridge.

4. Sneaky Elixir

Recipe: Sunset Firefly + Monster Part

Sometimes you will need to quietly sneak up on enemies so that you can catch them by surprise. Other times you will need to quietly get closer to animals while hunting, get near a horse so you can mount it, or walk up to lizards or insects so you can catch them for elixirs or side quests. There is a Stealth Armor Set in Kakariko Village, however it requires 1,800 rupees and the completion of a side quest. That’s when the Sneaky Elixir comes in. Its extremely easy to make, and takes the headache out of farming for meat, insects, lizards, frogs, and catching horses. It also allows you to get the first attack off on your enemies, which can be really helpful when fighting multiple enemies at once.

Sunset Fireflies are easy to find and catch. You can find them in clumps in Faron Woods, Pagos Woods, or really any wooded area around Hyrule at night. You can also buy them for 10 rupees from Beedle at the Highland Stable, or the New Serenne Stable.

3. Energizing Elixir

Recipe: Energetic Rhino Beetle or Restless Cricket + Monster Part

There is nothing more annoying than climbing a mountain and then realizing half-way through that you don’t have enough stamina to make it to the top. If you are still in the early game and don’t have much stamina, or even in the late game and decided to prioritize your hearts, then you will definitely need the Energizing Elixir.

More often than not, you will want to climb a mountain, swim across a body of water, or paraglide a far distance that may not be supported by your current stamina wheel. This elixir is especially helpful in the early game when you start out with barely any stamina. It gives you that invaluable extra boost you need so that you don’t have to start all over again.

Energetic Rhino Beetles can be found on the trunks of trees in West Necluda, Rok Woods near Skull Lake, or in the forest areas of Great Sky Island. It will be much easier though to find Restless Crickets. Restless Crickets can be bought for 10 rupees from Basel, a traveling merchant that travels between the New Serenne Stable and the Outskirt Stable. They can also be bought for 10 rupees from Beedle at the Outskirt Stable and the Dueling Peaks Stable. If you would rather find them in the wild, they are very easy to find in the grass, and under rocks just about anywhere on the map.

2. Hearty Elixir

Recipe: Hearty Lizard + Monster Part

Not having enough health to go up against a tough monster or boss battle is definitely a huge pain. Formidable enemies are placed everywhere in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and if you aren’t prepared to fight them, all you can really do is run away. In Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it is much easier to obtain extra hearts with Durians, which are easy to find and can be cooked in meals to add a ton of extra hearts to your health bar. However in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Durians were removed from the game because developers realized that the hearty meals were way too powerful and made the game too easy. Therefore, The Hearty Elixir is extremely valuable in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom because hearty meals are so much harder to come by.

This elixir not only restores all of your health, but also tacks on extra hearts to your health bar, which are extremely valuable when you encounter a really hard enemy or boss. Although it won’t give you as many extra hearts as the Durians did, it is still very useful.

Hearty Lizards are tricky to find in the wild. You can find them if you relentlessly hunt for them in the depths of the forests, but if you want to save yourself the headache, just head on over to Beedle and buy them for 100 rupees each. Beedle will have them in stock at the Highland Stable, Woodland Stable, Outskirt Stable, and Foothill Stable.

1. Enduring Elixir

Recipe: Tireless Frog + Monster Part

The Enduring Elixir is similar to the Hearty Elixir, but switches out the extra hearts for extra stamina. It may not grant you full recovery like the Hearty Elixir, but the extra stamina that it adds to your wheel can mean life or death in a really hairy situation.

Its so easy to suddenly find yourself just barely over a mountain or across a river or lake in the game. If you don’t have what you need to get from point A to B, you either have to start over or take time building something in order to get across or up something. This elixir gives you that tiny or big boost you need to get over that annoying mountain, tower, building, etc. It turns an extremely tilting moment into a satisfying one within seconds, and can save you a ton of time in the process. With the amount of climbing that this game requires, this elixir is basically a necessity for every player.

If you would like to try and catch a Tireless Frog, you can find them in wells, caves, and under rocks, although it will take some grinding. You can find them for 100 rupees in Beedle’s shop at the Wetland Stable, Kara Kara Bazaar, Riverside Stable, Foothill Stable, New Serenne Stable, or Snowfield Stable.
