In TES IV: Oblivion Remastered Birthsigns are constellations under which each player is born and will provide a Blessing of a passive ability or active one and in some cases a weakness. In this guide, I will cover some of the most useful Birthsigns and some good options for beginners. If you need some guidance on choosing a Birthsign, you can reference this guide.
Best Birthsigns
The following Birthsigns are great choices for beginner players and those who want to enhance specific Classes. Each of these Birthsigns offer a unique and helpful ability. Some of the Birthsigns do have a weakness so it is important to keep that in mind while selecting what is right for your playthrough. Please note that the following Birthsigns are not listed in a particular order. Let’s get started!
The Thief
What does it do?
Fortify Agility: + 10 Points
Fortify Luck: + 10 Points
Fortify Speed: + 10 Points
Benefit: The Thief Birthsign is a great choice for increasing your luck early on in the game which is the slowest attribute to raise. The extra Speed and Agility are helpful for Stealth and Archer style Classes because agility affects Bows, Daggers and Swords. The speed is useful for exploring and doing quests making this a great choice overall for a Birthsign.
The Mage
What does it do?
Fortify Magicka: +50 Points
Benefit: The Mage is a fantastic choice for players wanting to play Mage builds or Hybrid builds that require Magicka usage. Since you get a permanent +50 Magicka, you won’t have to worry about running out of Magicka often when casting spells early on. I have used it for multiple playthroughs and enjoyed the boost that it gives you.
The Warrior
What does it do?
Fortify Strength: + 10 Points
Fortify Endurance: + 10 Points
Benefit: The Warrior is a solid choice for players wanting to increase their character’s Health, you gain 10 points. The Warrior can be used for various Classes like a Knight, Battlemage, Barbarian or Warrior to name a few. The combination of Endurance and Strength is pretty useful and great for beginners as well.
The Lady
What does it do?
Fortify Willpower: + 10 Points
Fortify Endurance: + 10 Points
Benefit: The Lady Birthsign gives you two permanent effects, 10 points of Willpower and 10 points for Endurance. These effects can be helpful for many Classess like Healers, Nightblades, and Spellswords. If you are a beginner looking to try a Class that is a little flexible, The Lady Birthsign is a nice option. The High Elf and Breton races pair well with this Birthsign.
The Atronach
What does it do?
Fortify Magicka: + 150 Points
Spell Absorption: 50% chance of absorbing Spells
Weakness: Stunted Magicka (No Magicka Regen)
Benefit: The Atronach is a great choice for maximizing your Magicka and is a great way to absorb spells. Whether you are playing a Mage or Warrior Style Class, The Atronach Birthsign is excellent option because you can absorb some spells cast at you. The stunted Magicka can be a bit of a challenge but if you are creative, you can regenerate Magicka efficiently without it being a hindrance. Using Ayleid Wells, Restore Magicka Potions, or even visiting Altars of the Nine will help with restoring your Magicka. This is another one of my favorite Birthsigns and I recommend giving The Atronach a try!
Honorable Mentions
The Apprentice
The Apprentice Birthsign can be a bit intimidating with Weakness to Magic but the added 100 points of Magicka can be incredibly useful. The extra Magicka is a really nice bonus if you will be using it a lot for your Class during your playthrough. Bretons can find The Apprentice Birthsign useful since they already receive a 50 point Fortify Magic effect and 50% Magic Resistance effect.
The Lord
The Lord Birthsign can be useful for players looking to increase their Armor rating and Magic Resistance. The extra armor can be nice for beginners and early on you can benefit from having some Magic resistance. If your play style is focused on being more defensive and building up Armor, The Lord will work well with it. Also it is important to note that The Lord Birthsign was reworked in Oblivion Remastered and the image above has the new effects.
Birthsign Tips
Magical Stones
Visit Magical Stones around Cyrodiil to receive different powers that can help you with your play style . There are Birthsign Stones that provide the similar effects as their Birthsign counterparts but it lasts for 120 seconds. You can only have one Birthsign Stone active at a time. These stones are unmarked on the map but you can find them by exploring Cyrodiil.
Birthsign Tips
Before choosing your Birthsign, I recommend determining what Class you would like to play as. Once you know this, you will be able to choose a Birthsign that fits your needs much more efficiently. If you are worried about wanting to change your Birthsign, create a save file while in the Imperial City Sewers before you exit and finalize your Race, Class, and Birthsign selection. You can reload that Save File you created to change it.
Having trouble with a weakness that comes with a Birthsign? Potions or Enchantments are a great way to work around it and make the Birthsign more enjoyable to use.
