2023 was a pretty… Interesting year for games. There were some really bad ones, such as Skull Island: Rise of Kong and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Even Arkane Studios gave us their worst game ever, Redfall. But even with all of these bad games, there were still plenty of great titles.
Today, I’d like to focus on the positives and take some of the attention off of these terrible games. In this article, I’ll be showing you a list of my picks for the top 5 triple-AAA games of 2023! I’ll be discussing what I like most about them, and why you should play em’ if you haven’t already.
#5 – Dead Space Remake
Dead Space was a game that I never played when I was younger. I didn’t have anything against it, of course, but with how many games there are there’s bound to be a few you’ll end up missing out on. I’m very grateful for the release of the remake of the first Dead Space game. Not only has it given me a chance to play the original for the first time with updated graphics and controls, but it’s also given fans hope for a future sequel to the series.
This game is everything that a remake should be. The visuals are absolutely breathtaking, and the gameplay has been refined to a T. It manages to stay true to the original game’s vision, only deviating from it when it’s needed to make a better product. If you love horror, science fiction, third-person shooters, or just good games in general, you NEED to pick up the Dead Space remake.
#4 – Lies of P
I’ve heard Lies of P be described as “the closest thing we’ll ever get to Bloodborne on PC.” While I wouldn’t rule out getting Bloodborne ported to PC eventually, I do agree that this is a fantastic game to play while we wait for that to happen. Lies of P is a fast-paced, gritty, action-adventure game that borrows many elements from the previously mentioned title while managing to tell its own unique story and show off its own amazing world.
The game lets you play as the legendary puppet Pinocchio, where you’ll battle horrifying creatures through the plague-ridden streets of a French city. That’s not a sentence I expected to write today. The game has some of the most challenging–yet rewarding–combat out of any game released this year. It’s sure to keep you engaged from start to finish if you don’t throw your controller at the wall first, that is.
#3 – The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom is the latest installment in the long-running franchise The Legend of Zelda. It’s the highly anticipated sequel to Breath of The Wild, which many people consider to be the best LOZ game. Tears of The Kingdom continues Link’s story, bringing us a beautiful new map to explore and brand new gameplay mechanics to tinker around with.
Those gameplay mechanics are where the game really shines. You can use the tools at your disposal to create all sorts of unique contraptions that can help you defeat enemies and travel around the map. It gives players a lot of freedom to experiment and toy around with the game’s systems, making this one of the most unique games on this list.
#2 – Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2… I never thought I’d see the day, but it’s FINALLY here. And oh boy does it not disappoint. This is the sequel to the much-beloved game Alan Wake 2 that first released for the Xbox 360 all the way back in 2012. The game improves greatly on the formula, changing it up from an action game to more of a survival horror.
While some fans may dislike this change, I think it works, and it fits in with the story direction. Speaking of which, if you like story-driven games then this is definitely a great one to pick up. I’d recommend you play the first game as well as its DLCs if you have not already, that way you can get the full experience.
#1 – Baldur’s Gate 3
Finally, in first place on this list of the top 5 triple-AAA games of 2023, we have Baulder’s Gate 3! This game won Game of The Year at the 2023 Game Awards, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it made the top spot on this list. This is an open-world fantasy RPG, set in a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired universe. Speaking of which, it borrows many elements from D&D, letting you create and customize your own character and role-play them in unique ways.
This is where the game really shines. It’s widely considered to be the BEST RPG released this year, even better than Bethesda’s long-anticipated Starfield (which many Starfield players would probably agree with). So if you’re a huge D&D nerd, or just love RPGs in general, I can’t recommend this game highly enough. It definitely earned its Game of The Year award and then some.
