The 7 Best Single-Player Games for PS5

Go lone wolf in one of the top single-player experiences all within the comfort of your own couch.

The PlayStation 5 console is one of the best pieces of hardware ever released in gaming history. It’s a really powerful console that can play some of your favorite games in high resolutions and consistent frame rates. But what’s a good gaming console if you don’t have good games to go with it?

Say what you will about the exclusives on the PS5, you can’t deny that it does have a really solid library of games, period. Many of them offer really great single-player experiences, which is much appreciated in an industry full of live-service titles. So, for this article, I’ll be giving you my list of the console’s best single-player games!

#7 Horizon: Forbidden West

First up is Horizon: Forbidden West. The sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn, this entry in the series follows Aloy as she travels to the ruins of the west coast of the United States of America. A new and fresh location combined with refined RPG-mechanics and new gameplay features makes this a much appreciated sequel to the first game.

If you have not played the first one, I highly recommend that you play that first before getting this. The Horizon series of games is pretty story-focused, and because of that, you don’t want to miss out on any important plot points. Going back to this game, I have to say that it looks absolutely stunning running on the PS5, which is especially impressive considering it is open-world.

#6 God of War: Ragnarök

Next on this list of the top 7 best single-player games for PS5, I want to talk about God of War: Ragnarok. This is the sequel to the very well received God of War reboot that came out in 2018. This next entry in the series is more-or-less everything players loved about the first game, but expanded upon and enhanced. It continues the story of Kratos and his son Atreus, and oh boy does it not disappoint.

For those who have not played any God of War game, essentially this is a third-person action-game that takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Greek mythology. The combat is satisfying and crunchy, with an emphasis on melee gameplay. It’s a really fun game and one of the BEST exclusives available on the PS5 system. If you love Greek mythology or are just looking for a great PlayStation exclusive, I can’t recommend this game enough.

#5 Ghosts of Tsushima: Director’s Cut

From the makers of the inFAMOUS series, it’s Ghosts of Tsushima. The game takes place in Japan during the Mongolian invasion in the year 1274. You play as a samurai on a mission to defend his home island from the hostile invasion force. The game was first released several years ago, but has since received a next-gen upgrade available on the PlayStation 5. This upgrade comes with the DLC included, so it’s the definitive way to play the game.

As for the gameplay itself, it’s an open-world stealth/action game. You’ll travel around completing open world activities, completing missions, and in general, making the Mongolians wish they had never come to your island. This game also manages to be pretty historically accurate, so if you are a history nerd you might be interested in this game.

#4 The Last of Us: Part 1

The Last of Us: Part 1 is such a work of art. From the beautiful and lush environments to the griping story, there’s a lot to love about this game. For those unfamiliar with this title, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States after a deadly virus has swept through the world, turning almost everyone into fungoid-infected zombies.

The first entry in the series was released back in 2013 for the PlayStation 3, but has since been remade for the PlayStation 5. This is the definitive way to play the game. With overhauled graphics and numerous quality of life features, if you’ve never experienced the amazing story of The Last of Us before, then this is the best time to dive into it.

#3 Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 had a really rough launch, especially on the last generation of consoles. Why CDPR thought it would be a good idea to release the game on past systems is anyone’s guess. Despite this rough launch and questionable decision to release the game on hardware that was nearly a decade old, the current version of the game on PlayStation 5 has never been better.

With most of the bugs and glitches fixed, the RPG mechanics completely overhauled, and even an entire expansion, there’s never been a better time to play Cyberpunk 2077. The game takes place in Night City, a dystopian metropolis ruled by cutthroat corporations.

You play as V, a cybernetically enhanced mercenary trying to make a living. It’s an RPG that allows you to customize your build and play style. Like many RPGs, there are story choices and multiple endings (although the are not nearly as many story choices as there are gameplay choices).

#2 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

I really, really love the Ratchet & Clank series, and Rift Apart is arguably the best entry the series has had so far. Taking advantage of the PS5’s solid state drive, players are able to qucikly jump around from one dimension to the next without any loading screens, a really impressive feature both technically and in a gameplay sense.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an action platformer/third-person shooter with a Pixar-inspired art-style and a really interesting sci-fi universe. You play as, well, Ratchet, as he battles his way through the multiverse in an attempt to rejoin with his buddy Clank and defeat a new version of his old foe, Dr. Nefarious. While he does this, he’ll meet friends new and old. It’s a really light-hearted family-friendly game that makes a perfect holiday gift for the kids, or just for yourself.

#1 Red Dead Redemption 2

My choice for the BEST single-player game for the PlayStation 5 is Red Dead Redemption 2! If you’ve read my work before, chances are you know how obsessed with this game I am, so it should be no surprise I put it in first on this list. RDR2 is an open-world action-adventure game made by the same developers who gave us Grand Theft Auto V. It tells the tale of Arthur Morgan, the lead enforcer of a gang of outlaws trying to make a living in the Wild West.

This game is amazing for a lot of reasons. Players are given access to a beautiful, dense open-world full of random encounters to find, missions to complete, and NPCs to meet. You can live as an outlaw, robbing stage couches, homesteads, trains, and more. But the real star of the show is the amazing story. Arthur Morgan is without a doubt the BEST written protagonist I’ve ever played as in a video game. This game is a must-play, regardless if you’re on the PlayStation 5 or any other platform.
