From gripping narratives to fun gameplay mechanics, the RPG genre has had many great entries in recent years. There’s a game out there for anyone who wants to get lost in a fantastical world. While there are hundreds of RPGs to sift through, in this article I’ll be going over the best RPGs on the Xbox Series X/S. This list will also be in no specific order.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition
It would be a crime to list the best RPG games without mentioning Skyrim. A game so popular it’s been released seven times, it’s no surprise it made its way to the new consoles.
Complete with all the DLC, updated graphics, and limited modding, this is a good version of Skyrim to invest in if you haven’t played it before.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy
A bit of a sleeper hit when it first came out, Guardians Of The Galaxy is a fun romp through the galaxy with a pretty great version of these characters.
Fans of the movies may feel some misgivings since these versions of the Guardians don’t exactly match their movie counterparts, but I think that does them justice. This unique take on the characters makes them an excellent jumping-in point for someone who may not be familiar with the characters like myself.
Elden Ring
Few games can capture the hearts and minds so thoroughly like Elden Ring has. A fun game for veterans and newbies to the souls-like genre, Elden Ring will probably be one of the most popular games on this list.
The recent release of Shadow of the Erdtree proves that even two years after its initial release, people are still hype about this game. If you haven’t played this yet, you should give it a try. Beware, however, it’s a bit difficult.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Released in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received a next-gen update bringing this beloved game to the newer consoles. Lauded as one of the best RPGs ever made, this game shaped the direction of RPGs after its release.
Packaged with all its DLC, visual enhancements, and some new content, this is one of the best ways to play the game. Even better, if you already owned the game, you got the upgrade for free.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Much like Skyrim. There’s no way I could make a list of the best RPGs without mentioning Baldur’s Gate 3. An absolutely adored game, Baldur’s Gate 3 has taken the gaming world by the horns. And even though it took a little bit longer, this game eventually found its way onto the Xbox Series X/S.
The sequel to Bioware’s timeless classic Baldur’s Gate 1+2, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a fun, modern iteration of the series. Anything I’ve said here has probably been said a thousand times, so I’ll simply say, that if you haven’t played this game yet, you should give it a try.
Cyberpunk 2077
Another entry from CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077, is a game with a history that is almost as interesting as the game itself. Coming in as one of the most hyped games in recent memory, to say the game had a rocky launch would be an understatement.
In the early days of the game, you were more likely to see compilations of bugs instead of actual gameplay. It was rough. But for some, like me, the game sunk its claws in them despite all the problems. One anime series, several updates, and a critically acclaimed DLC later, the game finally matches the hype people felt before its release.
The next-gen update on the new consoles also adds improved performance options which makes the game even smoother to play.
