10 Best PS4 Workout Games

Ring Fit Adventure isn’t the first video game to incorporate home fitness into its mechanics, but its success certainly sparked a renewed interest in the active gaming genre. The best PS4 workout games take a dynamic approach to home fitness that gives gamers more tangible goals and milestones to strive for — all while reframing individual workouts as minigames and short adventures. For me, it’s done a lot to make exercising seem less like work and more like an immersive gaming experience.

As fun and productive as the best PS4 fitness games are, there aren’t many of them on the market. The pool of titles gets even smaller when you’re restricted to the platform(s) you can play on, and it can be challenging to find games that offer the type of workout you’re looking for on the console you use.

For this week’s roundup, I’ve collected a list of the best PlayStation workout games that are guaranteed to make you sweat. Not all of them are workout/fitness games by definition, but players who take advantage of these games’ active VR mechanics are sure to get a solid workout from even the most innocuous party game titles.

If you’re looking for a playful way to establish a solid daily exercise routine that transcends the typical home workout experience, feel free to read on!

Top 10 Best Workout Games for PS4

Let’s boogie our way straight into the list with a look at our pick for the #10 best workout game for PS4.

10. SUPERHOT VR

  • Genre: Action, FPS, Puzzle
  • Developer: SUPERHOT Team
  • Release Date: December 5, 2016

SUPERHOT VR is one of the aforementioned titles that encourages dynamic movement, but isn’t a titular fitness game.

Time to take out the bad guys using your arsenal of weaponry and mad shooter skills! Think you can handle the heat? In SUPERHOT VR, time moves forward when the player physically moves, so gameplay becomes a blend of action and strategy in which players must plan ahead to outmaneuver their opponents. Superhot’s VR mechanics allow players to fully immerse themselves in the action, dodging and slicing in real life and feeling the hurt in real-time.

SUPERHOT VR also includes several replayable challenges as part of the SUPERHOT FOREVER update, offering players a new way to experience the game. Many of these challenges expand on SUPERHOT VR’s time-manipulation gameplay, requiring new strategies and speed to reap further rewards.

I’ve ranked SUPERHOT VR relatively low on the list since its pace doesn’t necessarily require a lot of physical activity. Players set their own pace, and the game is content to proceed as quickly or as slowly as you ask it to. It can offer a solid workout if you use the VR elements to your advantage, especially in the challenge modes that ask you to complete levels in real-time. If you’re looking for a game that’s fun and challenging, consider checking out SUPERHOT VR.

9. VirZOOM Arcade

Virzoom
  • Genre: Family
  • Developer: VirZOOM Inc
  • Release Date: 2016

VirZOOM Arcade is designed to enhance the experience of exercising with a stationary bike. To that end, it transports players into a variety of arcade-style games with speed and endurance at their core. Players can run, fly, drive, and more in a series of replayable games that take the workout beyond the living room and into colorful and imaginative worlds.

The game offers a variety of online multiplayer options, from live and asynchronous private matches to global public events that can be joined at any time. Local multiplayer is also an option, even with only one stationary bike — players can take turns trying to beat each others’ high scores.

VirZOOM Arcade is a great cardio workout for those who already have the tools available and are just looking for a way to shake things up. With online tracking tools available on VirZOOM’s website, achieving your fitness goals has never been easier.

8. Knockout League

Knockout League
  • Genre: Arcade, Sports, Fighting
  • Developer: Grab Games
  • Release Date: January 24, 2017

Knockout League is a boxing game explicitly built for VR gameplay. Players must move, punch, block, and dodge in real-time to defeat a bizarre cast of enemy combatants. Use every technique in your arsenal to counter your opponent’s unique fighting styles, or Knockout League will knock the wind out of you as you claw your way to the top.

In KL, players can also use the game for training sessions, improving their speed, rhythm, stamina, and moves. Knockout League also includes a calorie tracker for players to monitor the workout benefits gained while playing.

There are a few other boxing games on this list, but don’t let the lower ranking fool you — Knockout League is a fun and engaging title that can provide a decent workout. It’s all about assessing the options to see what works best for you!

7. Sparc

Sparc
  • Genre: Action, Sports
  • Developer: CCP Games
  • Release Date: August 29, 2017

Sparc is a VR game that puts a uniquely virtual spin on real-world sports like tennis, table tennis, and racquetball. Players can throw, deflect, block, and dodge the balls of light that ricochet off the corridors around them, engaging in fun and fast-paced gameplay while getting a full-body workout.

The game offers a variety of different game modes, allowing players to hone their skills in single-player challenges and training or jump straight into online versus matches. The game relies more on skill than any special gimmicks, meaning that players can expect a fair challenge from their new opponents and can rise through the ranks themselves with regular practice.

Sparc is another example of a game that provides a good workout without necessarily falling into the “fitness games” category. If you’re a fan of the sports the game is based on and are looking for a way to get a similar thrill from home, consider giving Sparc a shot!

6. Creed: Rise to Glory

Creed Rise to Glory
  • Genre: Fighting, Sports
  • Developer: Survios
  • Release Date: September 25, 2018

Creed: Rise to Glory is the second boxing game on this list, and it earns its ranking with a truly immersive experience for fans of the Rocky franchise. The game’s campaign is based on the Creed movies, following the rise of Adonis Creed as he’s trained by Rocky Balboa to become a world-class fighter. Players can take on a series of championship opponents from the movies, along with a number of new challengers designed for the game’s Career Mode.

Players have multiple other gameplay modes at their disposal, whether they’re looking to improve their moves and endurance in montage-worthy training moments or test their skills in low-stakes custom matches. The game’s responsive VR melee makes multiplayer more interesting, allowing players to duke it out with real-world opponents in custom matches or online Quick Play.

If you enjoy generic boxing games but are looking for a more interactive experience and immersive story, Creed: Rise to Glory is worth checking out!

5. Beat Saber

Beat Saber
  • Genre: Rhythm, Party
  • Developer: Beat Games
  • Release Date: May 1, 2018

Coming in at no. 5 is an extremely popular game that made waves when it was released in early 2018. If you’ve heard of virtual gaming, you’ve probably heard of Beat Saber. This rhythm game took the world by storm when it released in 2018, combining spectacular light show effects with dance moves that require a lot more skill and endurance than it would seem. Players hold a red and a blue saber that they use to slash “beats” of the same color, using direction and rhythm to build combos on a wide selection of their favorite songs.

Exercise may not be the first thing mentioned about this popular game, but trust us, it is certainly one of the best PlayStation exercise games. Beat Saber offers a decent cardio workout, especially if you’re playing through a tough level or a fast-paced song. With hundreds of titles available for download and more added regularly, it’s definitely a game to look into if you enjoy working out to music.

4. BoxVR

BoxVR
  • Genre: Sports, Rhythm
  • Developer: FitXR
  • Release Date: June 13, 2017

I know I’ve included many boxing games on this list, but it’d be remiss not to include BoxVR in one of the top spots. The game combines elements from both boxing and rhythm games, teaching players boxing moves that they’ll use in tandem with music spanning a wide range of genres. Each cardio workout is professionally choreographed to get players’ adrenaline pumping, whether it’s a short warmup or a full endurance test!

Since BoxVR is designed as a fitness game, you’re more likely to get a full workout than you would be with one of the other boxing titles on this list. Workouts are recorded to help track your calories and can be customized to fit your desired intensity level. I recommend this as an option if you’re a fan of Beat Saber but are looking for slightly more interactive gameplay.

3. Yoga Master

Yoga Master
  • Genre: Fitness, Family
  • Developer: Oxygene s.r.l
  • Release Date: October 18, 2019

Yoga Master is a game that teaches balance of mind and body by incorporating lessons from international professional yoga coaches. Each lesson walks players through poses step by step, helping to guide posture and breathing for the best fitness routine possible.

There aren’t many “game” elements to Yoga Master, but each session offers all the benefits of a standard yoga class from the comfort of your living room. If you’re looking to improve balance and flexibility with your workouts, consider giving Yoga Master a try!

2. Sprint Vector

Sprint Vector
  • Genre: Platformer, Racing, Sports
  • Developer: Survios
  • Release Date: February 8, 2018

Sprint Vector is an adrenaline platformer that sends players running, jumping, climbing, and flying through colorful, interdimensional courses. Set to an electronic soundtrack and running commentary, Sprint Vector provides players with high-speed, head-to-head matches that challenge both speed and finesse.

The game also offers competitive multiplayer, allowing for public and private eight-player matches. If you enjoy games with zany settings and want to get a good cardio workout in, this is the game for you!

1. Just Dance 2020

Just Dance 2020
  • Genre: Rhythm, Party
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Release Date: November 5, 2019

The title of Just Dance gives you all the information you need to get started. It wins our top pick for the best PS4 exercise game.

Although the mechanics of the JD games don’t change much over the years, VR technology has allowed players to receive more useful feedback and more accurate scores. Not to mention, each new iteration brings a new line of hits to get players moving to the beat.

This game is another example of a party game that can still offer an intense workout, so feel free to give this one a shot if you love dancing. It’s a great and upbeat way (see what we did there?) to get off the couch and spend some time with friends.
