One of the first and most important choices in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is what class you will play. Between Warrior, Rogue, and Mage, Veilguard offers three unique and fun ways to go through the game. If you’ve been wondering what the best class to start your adventure with then keep reading because in this guide I’ll be going over each class to make your decision easier.
Playstyle is Key
Ranking each class in this game is somewhat unfair because each class will feel better or worse depending on the person playing. Bioware did a good job of making each class feel wholly unique, so personal preference and how you envision your Rook will be the most important deciding factor.
With that said some classes are simpler to play than others. While each class is capable of dealing a lot of damage, some do it with far less setup needed. Because of this, the ranking of these classes will be based on the complexity of each class and how easy it is to get those big damage numbers.
#3 Mage
Easily the flashiest of the three classes present in the game, magic looks the closest to how it’s been described in the series thus far. Unfortunately, like mage classes in a lot of games, this class isn’t as simple as its martial cousins.
The Mage is undoubtedly a powerful class, able to dish out powerful spells. When mastered I fully believe it could probably dish out the most damage amongst the three classes. The complexity of this class, however, is what lands it in the number three spot.
While Warrior and Rogue do most of their damage through simple hacking away at the enemy, the Mage needs the proper setup to get big damage. Clever use of elements, weaknesses, and combos are all necessary to reach the heights of this class. Pair that with one of the hardest class resources to recover (Mana), and it’s not as pick up and play as the other options.
#2 Rogue
Dashing swashbuckler or crack-shot archer both encompass the rogue class in Veilguard. While still powerful, the nature of the Rogue means that it’s got a couple more complexities than the Warrior.
Focusing on dodging and parrying attacks, the Rogue dashes around the battlefield dealing tons of damage, especially when stacked with buffs the Rogue can easily give themselves. Furthermore, their class resource, Momentum, is gained by dodging and parrying making it easier to gain than Mana.
Like most rogues, however, they lack a lot of defenses of the Warrior. While they have more defensive options than the Mage, they lack the defenses to face-tank enemy attacks and sometimes, especially later in the game, some fights can feel more like dodging attacks than actually attacking yourself.
#1 Warrior
Sometimes the simplest option is the best option. Both the spear and the shield, the Warrior strides into the center of combat and doesn’t leave until they’re the last one left.
While the Rogue is my favorite class to play, it’s hard to deny how the simplicity of the Warrior elevates the class. While simple, that doesn’t mean the class is boring. Like I said before, each class in Veilguard is unique and fun to play in its way. The added durability and consistent damage just make this class the strongest to play if you just want to pick up and play without focusing too hard on build makeup and advanced mechanics.
The Warrior’s unique resource, Rage, is probably the easiest to gain. Taking and dealing damage raises your Rage meter, which means you’ll likely also have your resource filled no matter how you play. Warriors are also excellent at building up Stagger which opens enemies up to finishing moves. With the right build, that could mean an instant kill on any enemy you take down. While all three classes are powerful, the Warrior just makes being the strongest, the easiest.
