Amnesia: The Bunker – 7 Tips to Stay Calm, Cool, & Collected

At long last, a new Amnesia game has been released! Amnesia: The Bunker is without a doubt, one of the best horror games released in recent years. The game manages to combine the best aspects of a survival horror game with some immersive sim elements to create a unique experience.

This is definitely one of the most complex Amnesia games yet. With such complexity, it can be confusing to figure out what to do and how to make the most of the game. Luckily for you, we are going to be giving you our Top 7 Tips & Tricks on how to survive and thrive in Amnesia: The Bunker.

Amnesia The Bunker: Top 7 Tips & Tricks

So what are we waiting for? Let’s get right into it!

Burn Corpses to Stop Rats From Covering Them

Frictional Games

Throughout the bunker, you will find the long-dead corpses of your fellow soldiers. These corpses are often swarming with giant rats that will attack you on sight if you come to close to them. This is kind of a big problem, as corpses will often contain valuable dog tags that can be used to unlock lockers and access useful materials. There are also corpses that can take up space in narrow hallways, meaning that rats will block your path and make it difficult to get through.

Even if you do manage to distract or chase away the rats, they will always come back to the body. Unless, of course, you burn it. If you take a bottle filled with gasoline, you can throw it onto the corpse. Now to set it on fire, just approach the corpse and interact with it with a lighter (which you can find in the Mission Storage room, inside one of the lockers). This will permanently discourage any rats from going near it again.

Don’t Bother Shooting The Monster

Frictional Games

You can probably ignore this tip if you are playing in Easy mode, and maybe Normal. But for those of you who play on Hard, it’s a good idea to avoid shooting the monster. This is because, first of all, ammunition is very rare, so you want to conserve as much of it as you can. If you shoot the monster you risk running out of bullets. This can be a big problem as bullets are also useful for shooting off locks, detonating traps, and exploding barrels, which are often more useful.

And second of all, even if you are able to fend off the monster once using bullets, all it will really do is just make him more aggressive in the long run. He will come after you more often if you try shooting him. So really it’s best to just use distractions to get him off your back instead.

Move Objects Around to Create Barricades & Block Holes

You can move around many of the large objects that you find inside the bunker. This includes barrels, crates, tables, and more. This is really useful for creating barricades that will make it harder for the monster to get you. There are several little holes throughout the map that the monster can spawn out of. But if you push a barrel or large object in front of it, then the monster won’t be able to immediately breakthrough.

Trigger Traps to Distract The Monster

Frictional Games

When exploring the map, you will usually find yourself needing to choose between one of several different pathways to take/areas to explore first. You might see a door leading to the right into another room, or a hallway taking you straight ahead to somewhere else. And often times, there will be traps you’ll need to avoid/detonate first in order to get to certain areas.

One thing I found myself doing often in my playthrough is triggering a trap, and then running away to an unexplored area in a different part of the area I was in. The monster would go to the trap and search for me in that area, leaving me to safely explore the place that I ran off to. This is an effective way to make exploration easier and safer, as you will be getting rid of dangerous traps while being free to go someplace else while the monster is distracted.

Use The Bunny Toy to Distract The Monster

There are many different ways that you can get the monster to leave you alone. From creating distractions by throwing things, to just shooting it in the face until it crawls away, you have several options for how to handle encounters. But the best way by far is to use the bunny toy.

The bunny toy is a unique item that can be found inside of a crater, which can be accessed by going through a secret passageway inside of the old Roman ruins. Click here for a video tutorial by YouTuber cad5150 that will show you how to get to it.

Once you collect this toy, you can throw it down in front of the monster. He will pick it up and inspect it before immediately retreating to the nearest hole, causing him to leave you alone for quite a while before returning. You can then retrieve the toy by going to the chapel.

Yank The Flashlight Two Times Maximum

Frictional Games via Koby Gibson Ross

The flashlight in Amnesia: The Bunker is probably one of the game’s coolest features. To activate it, you need to yank it, which generates loud noise, potentially attracting the monster. This creates a really tense risk-reward system that fits in so well with an Amnesia game. Luckily for you, you only need to pull the cord two times maximum for it to reach full power. So don’t bother doing it anymore than that, or you’ll risk attracting the monster for no good reason.

You Can Get “Unlimited” Gasoline in The Fuel Storage Room

Frictional Games

Keeping the lights on is extremely important in Amnesia: The Bunker. The monster will avoid the light, making it a lot safer to navigate the map. The only problem is that fuel is a very limited resource. Unless, of course, you know where to go to get unlimited gasoline. There is a fuel storage room that you can access fairly early on in your playthrough.

This room is in the right-most half of the Maintenance wing, on the opposite side from the entrance to the Pillbox. Inside of it is a giant tank that contains fuel. You can interact with this tank using an empty wine bottle to fill it up with fuel. This isn’t technically an “unlimited” source of fuel as the bottle is consumed upon using it in the generator, but there’s enough bottles laying around the bunker that you’ll still be well stocked.
