The 2016 E3 is slated to begin broadcasting press conferences 6/12. The event starts out with EA at 1:00PM PDT. Coverage is provided by Gamespot. A bit of unfortunate news was announced a few days ago that Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games dropped out of the E3 PC Gaming Show. While this raised some eyebrows and concerns, advocates say it is a good sign by the veteran developer that they are focused on development and not presentation. Nevertheless, there will still be many developers in attendance. Let’s just hope they can top last year’s debacle. At the very least we might get some info about what’s coming down the pipe in the Microsoft/Sony console space.
The official launch of Overwatch took place on May 24th. Already there are those placing bets on whether or not it will be the next big eSport. With 10 million strong before the game even launched, they certainly have the player base to work with. But I think one of the key questions will be if the spectator experience will be as enjoyable as say a game from the MOBA genre. Whatever the case, Blizzard is going to turn ranked play on towards the end of the month and that should give us some signs as to how things will develop.
The ELeague debuted on TBS and was off to a strong performance. DailyDot reported strong ratings and that the televised event on TBS averaged over half a million viewers over the first week of its existence. Turner’s investment (and their construction of the 10,000 square foot arena at its studios in Atlanta) seems to be paying off. In other news Sony’s PlayStation 4 sales have topped 40 million according to a report from WSJ. After running the numbers, the PS4 sales are actually outpacing all earlier models including the PS2 one of the best selling consoles of all time. Rick Fox owned eSports franchise is teaming with Propogate to produce a non-scripted series about the growing eSports phenomenon. Comcast has jumped on the eSports train and signed new brand sponsorships with the ESL network and Evil Geniuses organization.
